@beach-mom  I live in Manhattan and haven't been to Times Square in decades.  It's a tourist attraction.  I wouldn't have a problem going there in the daytime because there are enough crowds there now, but I think it's always a good idea to go with another person in any large city anywhere.  It's a big city with a lot of people and you just have to be aware of your surroundings.  Crime is random and it's not like we're besieged by daily shootings.  Crime occurs all across the country, but you don't hear about it on the national news because they're not NYC.  Look at all the mass shootings that have occurred recently in other states.  It's all over the place.  Guns.

Certain public policy laws and other factors having to do with police have also caused an increase in crime at this moment in time.  Hopefully, that will change with new local government in the near future.

I will say that I don't and wouldn't ride the subway at least not right now.  There aren't enough people riding yet and there is a problem with homeless and/or mentally unstable persons in the subway.  Also, the subway went back to 24/7 service a few days ago, eliminating the 4 hours or so of disinfecting.  I wouldn't ride for that reason either during a pandemic.

Some people are looking to move out of the city because they realize they can now work from home, so they want a house for their family.  As the city reopens, however, many people are coming back too.  Just like after 9/11.

@Luvsmyfam  No, Manhattan is not all ritzy, just some isolated areas.  I'm middle-class, retired and have been living here for quite a while.

Wear a mask. Social distance. Be part of the solution - not part of the problem.

Thank you @Deree ! I don't go there much, but it's always a treat when I do. My children are used to hopping on the train to go spend the weekend there with friends, once they are fully vaccinated and things are better. One isn't home yet, but they are anxious to visit. It sounds like they should wait a while, as they rely on the subway. Of course they are adults and they can do what they want, but I'm still their mom and I can give advice. They're pretty level headed about things. I really appreciate your answer!  Smiley Happy
