I love to knit and have been knitting since I am 12 I am 54 now. I was very hurt by my niece who had twins three years ago and I knitted the babies [a girl and a boy] sweaters, little socks and hats and a two blankets all in green and yellow and pink. She saw it had no price tag and thrown it aside. My sister-in-law [her mother] was very upset. And I was close to tears. The project took me almost 9 months to finish. Everyone was oohing and awing about it when they saw it. I know you ladies who knit know how much the wool cost and how much making something for the babies meant something to me. These are my Godchildren .. she later said she was sorry. But, I never made her children another thing. I only knit for my family and friends who appreciate and will get use out of the outfits. The twins are three almost four now. I see them quite often and when they were babies I never ever saw them wear any of the outfits I knitted for them.
Ugh, I know this so well! I learned long ago not to knit for other people when I was told once that "yarn thing" (I spent months knitting a lace shawl) was the best gift I could get her? Then with of all the nerve she had in her vain self, years later, asked me to knit a blanket for her new baby! Um, no!
I'm sorry you went through that situation, I know how much it hurts.
I am sorry to hear that. Ravelry has pages and pages of stories just like that of people who are not knitworthy. that site has the best forum format, you should all check it out.

I'm making the One Row Handspun Scarf by the Yarn Harlot. I'm making it for the Red Scarf Project for Foster Care to Success, an organization that help kids who are transitioning out of foster care and going to college. They help with scholarships, support, and care packages. Most foster kids have no one to support them when they leave the program and see other kids turning to parents for support or getting care packages, so the program reaches out to them and makes sure they are not forgotten.
My goal is to make one scarf a month, so I'm picking simple patterns I can do while watching TV or sitting in a waiting room. I'm also using acrylics more than normal.
If you want to read more about it, here is the project website: http://www.fc2success.org/programs/red-scarf-project-and-book-club/

I do more crochet and have taught a couple of daughters of friends, but overall both skills seem to be dying out. It is such a pity.
The "place" to be for knitters and crocheters is Ravelry.com. Not dying out there. I think there are over 2 million members.
Ravelry is amazing! I have the same user name there as here. My city has a lot of very active knitting groups, along with spinning groups. They meet in knitting stores, restaurants, libraries, book stores - places all over town.
I took a long break from knitting when I was having joint pains in my fingers, but right now things are going well (touch wooden needles) and I've got several projects ready to go.

Lately I seem to only want to knit small projects that involve simple patterns that don't require me to pay close attention to what I am knitting. I have been making simple scarfs that I can knit while watching TV. But how many scarfs can I knit! I only like to use nice yarns and the prices are so high.Same here. I've been knitting those little square dishcloths out of cotton yarn, while sitting in front of the T.V. I made some and gave them to the girls at the office for Christmas and everybody loves them, saying what a good job they do! Before my granddaughter was born in October, I made a baby afghan for her. I used to knit all kinds of things for my boys when they were little - mittens, scarves, sweaters, etc. but now I just knit simple things that don't require much concentration, just to keep from falling asleep in front of the T.V. after working all day!
Knit Picks dot com recently released several new free dishcloth patterns.
Thanks kathoderay! I'll check them out.

kathoderay,
Thanks so much for the pattern. I printed it and can't wait to start on it once I finish the 500 other projects I have going. I'm sure you can relate. Thanks again. docsgirl

I am a knitter. This is what I am making for me. It is a Lion Brand (free) pattern. I am using a seafoam color. I've made it before in the natural color.

Oh my - I am guilty of having too many projects at one time. Right now - I have a sock (I always have a sock going), block #3 of the Nora Gaughan Block of the month Afghan from Patternworks, an autumn Oregon cardigan (Alice Starmore), another brainless sweater made up of rectangles. Been knitting for almost 47 years now.. still love learning new things.
