I have to confess (blush!) to owning four. I have the first one, the Kindle Keyboard. It became outdated and I wanted color capability for magazines. So I got a Fire 2nd Generation. Then the high def Fire HDX went on sale and it was my birthday. Did I get rid of the Fire? Not yet...but I ought to. The HDX is by far my favorite.
And I bought a Kindle basic for about $40 on a HUGE sale to replace the Kindle Keyboard, which I'm also going to put up on Ebay as my long-battery, reading-outside Kindle. Its only defect is that it has no speakers (unlike the keyboard.)
So I have four but I'm going to make myself go down to 2. And I'm tempted by the larger screen version of the HDX (I have the 7") because I use it so much and even watch video on it. A larger screen would be nice.
I now take the HDX on trips (I go out of country once or twice a year and somewhere in the States about as often.) It replaces a laptop.
I recommend the HDX 7" if you want a tablet, the Basic if you want an e-reader only and not spend a bundle.

I wouldn't consider the e ink kindles tablets though. The web browsing capability of them is extremely limited and there are no additional apps. I have the first generation kindle that came out in 2007 and the Paperwhite.

Yes, I agree with that. So that knocks me down to 4. If you don't consider my Galaxy Note 3 a tablet, then I only have 3.
I'm not as rich as what I thought. LOL

I can't exactly say why, but that makes me feel a LOT better!

I would get a tablet before getting a kindle because you can download a kindle app to your tablet to buy books and still have all the other capabilities.

I have a paperwhite. It is great for reading in direct sunlight. Prime customers can borrow Kindle books only if they have a Kindle device. You can borrow a book for long time.

You can also borrow if you have their free kindle reading app installed on your pc or mac too.
