Did these conditions exist when the committee was deciding on a location? If so, why was it chosen ?

Google "FIFA" + scandal + bribes. Same thing with the IOC. Money makes the world go round, the world go round....

I hope all of the events go well and participants and spectators stay safe but I can't help but have a bad feeling about the whole thing : (

Many years ago, I read a story in the Wall Street Journal (as I remember) about business owners in Rio paying to get rid of the groups of orphaned children that were on the streets.

The buinesses felt they were a plague and bad for business, so they would have them "disappeared."

Even though I have no desire to travel there, that story certainly stayed with me all these years.

Now, seeing all the issues they are having, the filth, etc. it makes me wonder why they were ever selected for the games.

I have been to 3 Olympics (Sapporo, Innsbruck, LA).  I spent 5 weeks in Rio and other major Brazilian cities, shortly after the Rio Olympics were announced.  There is no way this is safe for athletes or visitors.  I was on a ship for most of my visit, except for one so in Rio at the westin.  There is a lot of poverty and crime (I met many people who were pickpockets or mugged.  Someone must have paid a big bribe for Rio to have gotten the games at all.

I've also been to Rio and there is no way the Olympics should be held in that city.

Hopefully security can handle the horrendous crime and everyone remains safe.

The natural beauty of the city is amazing - but they need to level and start over.

I just happened to catch new promos for the Olympics, I lived in Rio for 7 years, that city, though breath taking in some areas, has always been steeped in corruption.  I too was shocked they were picked for the Games and that was before the health threat.

Makes me so happy that I did not make the Olympic team.  I really didn't want to go to Rio.

@Witchywoman I remember reading that article... it was awful what was going on THEN. It's no better now.

I feel sad for all of the athletes who have worked so very hard to make it to the Olympics--and now have reservations about the safety of the venue. Hopefully, this is more media hype and everything will go off without any problems! I sure hope so.

This is my most important thought about the whole affair as well. To train and compete and work your way up to earn a spot on an Olympic team, then have it all tainted with these problems is so very sad. Especially for the female athletes to have to make a decision about the health safety issues just seems unfair after all their dedication.

I'm sure the economic impact on the region hosting is going to be felt if a lot of people stay away or things go bad once people arrive, and that could be very devastating to the local economy as well.
