@geezerette wrote:Isn't it mandarin season? Every year at this time (I think) Kroger always has some brand of mandarin oranges that are delicious. The first couple of bags at the beginning of the season are juicy and sweet. Later in the season, not so much. And they're always on sale.
But I haven't seen the same brand this year. Nor have I seen any brand that has been on sale. I'm just finishing up some that I bought some time ago that are okay, but not the same. Not as sweet or as juicy. Maybe it was a bad year for oranges?
Cuties?
As in, when is a Cutie a Mandarin and when is it a Clementine?
The season is November through April. And I haven't had any citrus lately so I should go find some. I had disappointing Juici apples, two Fujis that were rotten to the core (literally) and three inedible avocados -- also rotten. So annoying! We wanted avocado with our adovada!
Until this week I was having pretty good luck with produce. What happened?
I have to buy new apples today so I'll take a look at the citrus and see what's in stock. I'm pretty sure Cuties are still available.
Close, but no cigar. They're Halos. And I just found them this morning. I bought a bag, but they don't look promising. Weird size--larger than normal, almost like they're trying to pass off something else as a mandarin. And they only had two bags, which were in two boxes which tells me they didn't get the quantities they normally get. Usually they have a separate aisle made up of orange boxes, like sweet potatoes near Thanksgiving.
The Cuties are at Walmart. And I don't like them. Every time I've had them they're drier and not as sweet than the Halos. I've found much of Walmart's produce to be just not quite as good as Kroger. At least here. Not that either one has anything to write home about. If it's available, it's often so old and wrinkled I think I'd be better off eating the produce bags instead of the produce.
I mentioned your post to BH and he said you were referring to Halos. Well, we went to Smith's (Kroger) today and they had something like Cuties -- with similar packaging -- called Adorbs.
Adorbs.
I have to agree. I haven't bought Walmart produce in awhile, but I remember it was kinda hit and miss.
Gotta love a guy that can remember the name of a specific brand of oranges in a certain store! Definitely a keeper.😉❤️
I've tried the Adorbs too. Another 'Meh'. If they're at your stores now, I'm wondering if they're going to replace the Halos. I don't know if the Halos come from a specific grove or area, but they just taste better than any of the other brands.
And there is the simple reason I have a hard time liking and eating fruits and veggies on a consistent basis: taste. Junk food always tastes the same. You know what you're going to get when you buy that bag of chips or carton of ice cream. But when you're dealing with food that is seasonal and regional, it's a whole different ball game. We used to get Georgia peaches here in season. They were delicious, and I'm not really a fan of peaches. But the last few years, they've been nonexistent too. Even in peach season the peaches we get now are tasteless.
Same thing with grapes. I'm a green grape person. The California green grapes are in my frig the entire season they're available. Now our green grapes are from Peru and they're tasteless. Wait--scratch that. They're sour. I've switched to eating raisins until I can get my California grapes again.
I also think that's why people are healthier depending on where they live. If you're living in an area where decent, fresh produce is available, along with a nice climate, you tend to eat better and exercise more.
Good point. I think I took California for granted. Nice climate and access to a variety of healthy foods. Had to get out of there, though. My only regret is that I never visited Yosemite. Dumb.
But I drive around Albuquerque and notice the lack of access to grocery stores. The city government wrings its hands and wonders why it can't get people to go downtown. Well, there are many reasons, but one reason is that if you live there, you still have to drive across town to find groceries. People in some neighborhoods depend on fast food and Walgreens. A sad state of affairs. It's a problem that grower's markets won't fix completely. A person can buy kale, but how is he going to eat it?
There's always the argument that good food is too expensive. It's cheaper to buy Totino's pizzas and fast food off the $1 menu. My Italian grandfather always said a person ends up giving all his money to either a doctor or a lawyer. If you don't invest in your health, you'll just give that money to the healthcare system.
Good food isn't cheap but there are ways to prepare it that are less expensive than the alternative. It's just that people aren't preparing food at home. No one taught them how to cook. No one taught them how to shop. Who had time?
Cuties
Variety Availability
Early Clementines November 1 to Thanksgiving
Clemenules Thanksgiving to Christmas
Clemenules Christmas to January
Late Mandarins January 16 to April 1
Halos
Variety Availability
Clementines November to January
Murcott February to April
So now you have me researching Halos and Cuties. Both mandarins, different companies. I'm still trying to figure out the Murcotts and Clemenules.
🤣🤣🤣
But you've answered a long-standing question of mine as to why my first bag of Halos always tastes better than the second bag: apparently the late season mandarins are a different variety. And also the difference in the brands.
Maybe I should try the early Cuties next year. Looks like I have a preference for "Clementines".
And I always thought of them as tangerines. ![]()

It dawned on my this morning that this month I want to free myself from the notion that when I do find a good sale, I have to buy that item in multiples!
With my medications and age, my hair has really gotten thin and dry, so I've been wanting to find a conditioner that will help.
Starting tomorrow, Costco will have Alba Botanica Mega Moisture Coconut Milk Conditioner on sale with $4 off (limit 2). I've never seen this one there before.
Normally, when I buy conditoner, I would buy 2 and go back before the sale is over and buy 2 more. These are 34 oz bottles! Just how much conditioner does one person need? With this sale, I'm going to try to limit myself to just one bottle.
So, I will be calling this "Free Yourself February" (thanks @FindingMyJoy). Freeing myself mentally from the thinking that causes me to build stockpiles, and eventually freeing myself from the excess products as I work them down.
@just bee, did you notice I changed my avatar? That's a pic of Cinnamon from the shelter's website (we haven't taken any yet). BTW, she's becoming used to getting less food. She no longer acts like she's being starved! ![]()

You know down deep in you heart they're all really just glorified oranges. 😄
Slap on a fancy name and you can get a fancy price for them.💵💸

In keeping with the subject of the last couple of posts, Cinnamon looks like a real "Cutie"!😄 I'll bet she's sweet, too!😉 Happy to hear she's accepting less food (I wish I could get into that habit!). I think sometimes it's easier to acclimate a rescue animal to a different routine than one you've had for years. She doesn't yet know what's supposed to be "normal" for her new life. In some ways a clean slate.
Good luck with your new stockpiling attitude. I think we all have a problem with that at least to some degree. Which is funny, if you think about it. Nowadays, with everything so plentiful and literally at our fingertips, why is it that we feel we have to hoard products like a squirrel gathering nuts for a harsh winter? 🧐🐿
(Okay, I realize that is really a chipmunk, but it's as close as I can get!🤣)

Free My Mind in February is my mantra for the month.
I'm feeling overloaded with bad news and need to stop filling my head with junk that I can't control. Why spend time reading and watching nonstop bad news? There are a couple news topics that just annoy me, I'm putting on blinders to ignore it. I need to stop the negative self-talk = why did i buy all of this stuff? why did I allow myself to get so out of shape? why am I still at a job that I dislike? I need to really just press pause and clear out the mental clutter.
Free myself from the urge to buy things I don't need. I've cut back on my time watching mindless QVC or HSN shows and will continue to cut out more this month. I used to think that was a happy place to just forget about real life but it's really just temptation to buy stuff. The time spent watching that will be better used by picking up a good book. In recent months, I've really renewed my love of reading again
I find that I'm enjoying reading much more than wasting time online or watching tv.
Freeing myself from physical clutter will be good for my mental wellness too. I'm breaking up my clutter into projects - smaller projects so I can complete a project, feel good about the progress, then move on to another project. I know it's too hard looking at the full big issue. It's like losing weight. I'm breaking it into 5 pound segments instead of looking at the bigger number I need to lose.

@geezerette Thank you. Yes, Cinnamon is a very sweet "Cutie". I tell her every day how pretty she is.
My stockpiling tendencies started many years ago. It's a long story, but at one time I was staying with friends, going through a home foreclosure and a divorce. Years later, back on my feet, I was able to purchase things that I wanted.
Well, that was comforting, so why not buy more? At on point, I was waiting for the UPS truck to deliver 9 packages in one day. I'm not that bad now, but I still fight the need to stockpile (I hate to use the word "hoard" because it reminds me of all the trash on the Hoarders show.)
One mantra that always plays in my head is: "It's better to have and not need, than need and not have". I just take it to the extreme.
I'm a work in progress.

I love cuties/halos/mandarins/clementines! Whatever you call them, I find these orange balls of goodness to be great yummy way to increase my fruits in my diet.
Usually I can find good quality however this weekend when I went shopping, I was going to buy a bag of them but each bag I picked up I could see bad ones? Either already looked like they were spoiling or had the sad shrunken look. I put the bags back and told myself not worth buying. I'll wait until next time and maybe they will be better quality. Instead I picked up a bag of apples - Jazz apples. So far they have been good.

@FindingMyJoy , Yes, yes, and yes. I took my cue from you for the month and we are pretty much aligned.
Most of what you posted above applies to me as well (but for the fact that I'm retired). One would think that since I am retired, my home would be spotless and uncluttered. But it hasn't worked out that way.
And yes, I used to love to read. My mother used to call me a "bookworm". I need to get back to that and forego mindlessly watching stupid soap operas on tv.

Somehow an offhand remark about oranges has evolved into a detailed discussion and research project!😂 But since you commented...the poor quality of mandarins, and perhaps more types of California produce, got me to wondering if the recent massive wildfires affected some of the crops out there.
Whatver the reason, I now know it's not just my little crummy store.
