@geezerette

Cuties?

Cuties

As in, when is a Cutie a Mandarin and when is it a Clementine?

Cuties

The season is November through April.  And I haven't had any citrus lately so I should go find some.  I had disappointing Juici apples, two Fujis that were rotten to the core (literally) and three inedible avocados -- also rotten.  So annoying!  We wanted avocado with our adovada! Woman Mad

Until this week I was having pretty good luck with produce.  What happened?

I have to buy new apples today so I'll take a look at the citrus and see what's in stock.  I'm pretty sure Cuties are still available.

@just bee

Close, but no cigar.  They're Halos.  And I just found them this morning.  I bought a bag, but they don't look promising.   Weird size--larger than normal, almost like they're trying to pass off something else as a mandarin.  And they only had two bags, which were in two boxes which tells me they didn't get the quantities they normally get.  Usually they have a separate aisle made up of orange boxes, like sweet potatoes near Thanksgiving.

The Cuties are at Walmart.  And I don't like them.  Every time I've had them they're drier and not as sweet than the Halos.  I've found much of Walmart's produce to be just not quite as good as Kroger.  At least here.  Not that either one has anything to write home about.  If it's available, it's often so old and wrinkled I think I'd be better off eating the produce bags instead of the produce.

@geezerette

I mentioned your post to BH and he said you were referring to Halos.  Well, we went to Smith's (Kroger) today and they had something like Cuties -- with similar packaging -- called Adorbs.

Adorbs.

I have to agree.  I haven't bought Walmart produce in awhile, but I remember it was kinda hit and miss.

Re: ComPact 2020 – Fill in the _____ February

I am sorry but I can't find and appropriate word for February. I'm not doing so great with my mother. I have employed more help but she's mad.
Don't want to talk much about it....

@rnmom, that is great! Remember you aren't perfect so when you slip up don't worry . Just move on and forget it. Don't take the negative view. Remember to just start again. You can do this.☺

I just bought a bag of oranges too. They are just ok.
Good fruit and produce are hard to find.
I don't like this cold weather. I want spring now.
My apple trees will come in this year and they are so good. You can't beat those!

I hope everybody is doing good. Take care everybody!

Re: ComPact 2020 – Fill in the _____ February

@Brisky - I am sorry that things are difficult with your mom.

Several times my mom needed help at home before she passed and she refused to let me and my sister hire any help to come in. She insisted that either me or my sister took turns spending the days and nights with her.

The last time, after about 2 weeks, we were ready to put our foot down and tell her she had to hire some in home help, we just couldn't do it anymore. (My kids were only 2 and 5 when she died, my sister's were 9 and 11, so we were busy) Then she ended up requiring emergency surgery and between the hospital and rehab never did get back home.

So I can understand how upsetting it is to have your mom be "mad" at you, but you have to take care of yourself too. Sometimes we just can't do everything. I'm sorry you're going thru this. We are here if you ever decide you want to talk.

Take care.

Funky February?

My sister and I were on the phone the other day and she thanked me for taking our mother.  After my sister -- my mother's caregiver -- died, my mother stayed with my other sister and it didn't go well.

Taking care of a parent is hard when it feels like you're taking care of a child.  They can be really stubborn.

Don't take anything personally.  It's exhausting jolly-dogging someone.  That's a term I still use today with many of my patients.  I picked it up from Doberman people.  It was the advice they gave me when a dog is acting like it may rip off your face.

You get down on the floor in the play position and "wag" your hindquarters.  I think it confuses the dog so much that he forgets he wanted to attack you.  Or he thinks you're just out of your mind.

But it's better than getting your face ripped off.

Re: ComPact 2020 – Fill in the _____ February

I was going to pick up some citrus to bring to work but I bought a bag of mini-peppers instead.  My apple this week will be Envy.  After that mealy Juici, I have to have something crisp.

Peppers

Envy

I bought two dark chocolate bars -- 88% cocoa.  My plan is to eat a square a day.  The bar I tried yesterday is so dark it's almost black.

After a couple days that felt like spring, we're getting a winter storm.  Then it'll be spring again.

Scrubbies

I'm really pleased with this product.  I can toss that last Konjac sponge.

I use Huggies Natural Care wipes to remove my makeup and even though I don't see any traces of my CC cream after the second wipe, I use this scrubbie with the Equate CeraVe dupe and I can see flesh-colored lather.  This thing takes off the CC cream that's still on my face.

Have to say the Equate doesn't do the greatest job removing eyeliner, but that's okay.  I like it anyway.

I'm happy with the combination.  Washing my face is fun again. Woman LOL

Gotta love a guy that can remember the name of a specific brand of oranges in a certain store!  Definitely a keeper.😉❤️

I've tried the Adorbs too.  Another 'Meh'.  If they're at your stores now, I'm wondering if they're going to replace the Halos.  I don't know if the Halos come from a specific grove or area, but they just taste better than any of the other brands.

And there is the simple reason I have a hard time liking and eating fruits and veggies on a consistent basis: taste.  Junk food always tastes the same.  You know what you're going to get when you buy that bag of chips or carton of ice cream.  But when you're dealing with food that is seasonal and regional, it's a whole different ball game.  We used to get Georgia peaches here in season.  They were delicious, and I'm not really a fan of peaches.  But the last few years, they've been nonexistent too.  Even in peach season the peaches we get now are tasteless.

Same thing with grapes.  I'm a green grape person.  The California green grapes are in my frig the entire season they're available.  Now our green grapes are from Peru and they're tasteless.  Wait--scratch that.  They're sour.  I've switched to eating raisins until I can get my California grapes again.

I also think that's why people are healthier depending on where they live.  If you're living in an area where decent, fresh produce is available, along with a nice climate, you tend to eat better and exercise more.

I had my fingers crossed that your mom was not the reason we hadn't heard from you in a while.  I'm sorry to hear she's having problems.  Or rather, you're having problems--with her.  I think a lot of us have gone through (or are in the process of going through) similar situations.  It's tough, and there's no easy solution or one answer.  You just do the best you can at the time.  What else can you do?

I'll just reiterate what @rnmom said, that we're here anytime you want to vent. ❤️

But I'm glad to hear that I'm not the only one getting "just okay" oranges!😄  And you can have our warm weather; it's too warm here now for this time of year.  I don't like it.  But it's going to get cold again in another twelve hours. Up and down, like a Jack-In-The-Box.  That's what our weather has been like this whole winter.  🤕

Hang in there kiddo...❤️

Good point.  I think I took California for granted.  Nice climate and access to a variety of healthy foods.  Had to get out of there, though.  My only regret is that I never visited Yosemite.  Dumb.

But I drive around Albuquerque and notice the lack of access to grocery stores.  The city government wrings its hands and wonders why it can't get people to go downtown.  Well, there are many reasons, but one reason is that if you live there, you still have to drive across town to find groceries.  People in some neighborhoods depend on fast food and Walgreens.  A sad state of affairs.  It's a problem that grower's markets won't fix completely.  A person can buy kale, but how is he going to eat it?

There's always the argument that good food is too expensive.  It's cheaper to buy Totino's pizzas and fast food off the $1 menu.  My Italian grandfather always said a person ends up giving all his money to either a doctor or a lawyer.  If you don't invest in your health, you'll just give that money to the healthcare system.

Good food isn't cheap but there are ways to prepare it that are less expensive than the alternative.  It's just that people aren't preparing food at home.  No one taught them how to cook.  No one taught them how to shop.  Who had time?

Cuties

Variety                              Availability

Early Clementines           November 1 to Thanksgiving

Clemenules                     Thanksgiving to Christmas

Clemenules                     Christmas to January

Late Mandarins               January 16 to April 1

Halos

Variety                 Availability

Clementines          November to January

Murcott                  February to April

So now you have me researching Halos and Cuties.  Both mandarins, different companies.  I'm still trying to figure out the Murcotts and Clemenules.

🤣🤣🤣

But you've answered a long-standing question of mine as to why my first bag of Halos always tastes better than the second bag:  apparently the late season mandarins are a different variety.  And also the difference in the brands.

Maybe I should try the early Cuties next year.  Looks like I have a preference for "Clementines".
