@Cakers3 Trust me, I'm not getting involved. Dear Friend just wanted to vent about the drama he's witnessing and he is also staying out of it.
There are many layers to this situation and you and a few others picked up on it. The Son is a doormat but he tolerates it because he loves her and wants to be accepted by the Family because he is not of their culture. The puppy, to me, illustrates ALL that is wrong with these people and yet, he wants Dear Friend to "fix" it so he can stay in with the Family and his Fiance (who sees no issue with getting rid of the dog). Over the years, I have come to the opinion that they look as animals as "disposable" and that's all there is to say. When I first heard about the puppy and that the Son was going to tell them about it being for sale, I said "NO, they're not going to want to deal with it!" Hate to say it...I was right.
So much WTF to go around. I'm just sitting back, watching/listening and sipping my tea.

If Mr. Doormat thinks he and fiancée have a future together after all this drama, being a doormat is the least of his issues. He is an idiot!
One of our dogs came to us from a very similar situation. Woman who had no knowledge, or experience with dogs bought a German Shepherd pup from a breeder. Raised him as an inside dog to the age of 18 months; he pretty much destroyed her home. She put him outside where he barked at everything, tore up everything, killed cats, and disturbed the neighbors. In our case the breeder took the dog back, and we got the dog from her.
This dog was labeled a neurotic mess when we took him. The breeders vet wanted to put the dog on anxiety meds; our vet laughed at that, and said just put him outside with your other dog, and he will adjust. And he did. He’s a great dog now; very protective and very territorial, but he still hates cats.

After rescuing the dog the son needs to RUN away from that family and not consider marriage. It will end in divorce!

If they took the dog to the same place a friend of mine's dog was taken. I don't think you have to be concerned about the dog. It has been "taken care of".
My friend lives in NYC. His landlord evicted him - with No Notice. The landlord took his dog to a high kill shelter and said the dog was vicious. The dog was a sweetheart. Well, my friend was given 48 hours to claim his dog or it would be killed. Of course they did not tell my friend where the dog was for the first 24 hours.
He was able the claim his dog but they were literally ready to put the dog down as he was trying to claim the dog. He had to wait for the place to open because it closed at 5PM and did not open until 8AM. As soon as he found out where the dog was, he camped out in front of the shelter. And they were ready to put the dog down well before the 48 hour mark.
But the high kill shelter claimed the dog was not properly vaccinated against rabies and that is why they were going to put the dog down ASAP. My friend pointed out that they had taken the dog's collar off and threw it out. And threw out the proof of the rabies vaccine.
I don't know what is wrong with people sometimes. It is so sad the read about your friend and her son.

I doubt it's a no kill place as the only one I know of is outside Baltimore and they are down near DC.
In the end, it's sad on so many levels. It's also interesting that no one has answered the question:
if this was your kid, would YOU have taken the puppy? I would not. That said, I'm willing to bet my in-laws would have. Is it wrong to "fix" a problem your kid gets himself/herself into? In this case, I think it is.

@Catty2 wrote:With so many rescues and shelters there is no reason to pay $350 for a dog. This isn't the dog's fault, it's the family's fault. I'm hoping that the dog hasn't been put down since they lied and said it bit children. Hoping it will find a forever family who knows how to take care of a puppy. Classic example of people who shouldn't have a dog or any pet.
@Catty2 There are a lot of valid reasons to pay for a puppy. While it is wonderful to get a shelter dog, I also think it is wonderful for people who love and support different breeds of dogs.
I am very afraid that wonderful, beautiful, loving dog breeds will simply cease to exist because people are sometime vilified for buy one. Do you really want to not see cocker spaniels any more? I sure don't!

I wouldn't do anything but I can tell you what I think about these people and it's not fit to post on this board.
