Re: What Are You Reading --- June 2014

I'm currently reading Mrs. Poe by Lynn Cullen. It's inspired by an alleged love triangle between poet Francis Osgood, Edgar Allen Poe and his wife. Francis becomes entranced by Edgar and they inevitably have an affair. Mrs. Poe, however, a fan of Osgood, becomes her friend as well, throwing a wrench into the whole sordid affair. I'm not very far into the book, but it has me hooked. This is the sort of stuff I love. Historical fiction. Smile

Just finished THE WEIGHT OF SILENCE by Heather Gudenkauf. It was pretty good. Three and one-half stars out of five. Storyline follows... It happens quietly one August morning. As dawn's shimmering light drenches the humid Iowa air, two families awaken to find their little girls have gone missing in the night. Seven-year-old Calli Clark is sweet, gentle, a dreamer who suffers from selective mutism brought on by tragedy that pulled her deep into silence as a toddler. Calli's mother, Antonia, tried to be the best mother she could within the confines of marriage to a mostly absent, often angry husband. Now, though she denies that her husband could be involved in the possible abductions, she fears her decision to stay in her marriage has cost her more than her daughter's voice. Petra Gregory is Calli's best friend, her soul mate and her voice. But neither Petra nor Calli has been heard from since their disappearance was discovered. Desperate to find his child, Martin Gregory is forced to confront a side of himself he did not know existed beneath his intellectual, professorial demeanor. Now these families are tied by the question of what happened to their children. And the answer is trapped in the silence of unspoken family secrets.

If you like her books (I have read all 4 of them) you will love her newest called "Little "Mercies" which I think is her best book yet. I lucked out finding a copy on eBay but the book isn't released until the end of June or early July. It is basically about something a mother did that transformed and changed her life that is right out of the headlines today!!! Be sure and read it!!!

I just read Keep Quiet by Lisa Scottolini. It was a miserable book to read because it was all about one amoral/illegal/stupid decision made after another. The downward spiral was quite predicable, but the ending was not.

This would be a very good book club book choice because there would be so much to discuss.

Worldglobetrotter, the key word for that book about Mrs. Poe is FICTION. Almost no historic fact.

Thank you - I will reserve my copy from the library. Currently and not so currently reading THE GOLDFINCH - it is l o n g. If this was a physical book, I'll probably would have passed. Who could lug a 5lb book for weeks? I like the story but I'm not reading every word. Some sections, I'm just skimming. I know it won the Pulitzer prize but it still could have been edited some more.

To all of you Nancy E. Turner fans (These is my Words, Sarah's Quilt, The Star Garden), she has a new book out. Finally. Not a sequel, I think that story was just over. It's called My Name is Resolute. It's a very thick book, almost six hundred pages. I am caught with her (Resolute) being abducted by pirates in the very first chapter. It is serious reading, but captivating. If I didn't love this author I would have passed the book right by. It is historical fiction, but so are her others.

I was going to post that exact comment. I love Historical Fiction, but this one skipped the Historical part. I think it's OK to surround real people with fictional ones to create a story but an author shouldn't change the lives of the actual people willy-nilly. IMO. Wink

I pulled the bookmark on this one.

We Were Liars

By E. Lockhart

Marketed as a YA book. About 1/2 way through. Very quick read. Intriguing so far. Not quite done yet, but it has completely drawn me in thus far.

I finished Beatriz Williams' latest, THE SECRET LIFE OF VIOLET GRANT. Lots of twists and turns right up to the end. I liked it! No midpoint slump which plagues some books I've read. So excited to finish it, but sad it's done which means I have to find a new book to engage my interest! Happy Reading!
