Solution:   Pretend you are moving across country into an unknown size rental.

We did that for real and got rid of at least 50% of everything we owned before the move.  Once moved into a rental, we still got rid of more.

I sold some things on FB yard sale and gave some stuff away but most of it went on the front porch about 8-10 times for the Vietnam Vets to pick up.   Our front porch wasn't tiny and it was full everytime they came.

This thread is so right on time ! I am  currently downsizing and I am so overwhelmed ! My basement is full of stuff from 22 years of living here. Kids grown and out, no one but me so I am moving to a smaller home. I have so far found stuff I forgot I had, old items from a gift basket business I used to have, tons of flower pots, on and on. My daughter has promised to help me and I know she will but it's been almost depressing to see so much stuff I have to go through. Why did I decide to do this ???Smiley Frustrated

@goldensrbest

There might be, but...finding them is too much of a chore when you can just call and schedule a pickup with an organization.

I hear what you are saying, but...I'm not active in any churches, so I'd be starting from ground zero.

Likely most places that serve meals, use paper or plastic.

But, it's a kind thought.

Thank you for offering it.

But, you are doing it!  That's what it important.

I, too, make gift baskets for charitable auctions, but that stuff all goes out of the house at some point.

Just the same, I have enough to make baskets until the cows come home, so I've stopped buying things for now.

It can be overwhelming. I am 68 and when I retired 6 years ago my first goal was to downsize and it was the best thing I ever did. I did it room by room and every closet, cupboard, and drawer were included. I took everything to Goodwill. I have never looked back or regretted anything I got rid of. I am at peace knowing that no one else will have to deal with it. My garage and basement are almost empty.

Re: Too much stuff!

I like supporting our local Union Mission.  I just learned they operate an upscale thrift shop, and the inventory I saw online reflects exactly what I read here about donating collections of beautiful things not being used, with no one to hand them down to.

One of the pictures showed an entire tabletop of beautiful blue willow, and dishes with lemons on them.  My guess was a service for 12 with numerous serving pieces, and the large display of pieces looked like something I would see displayed at Macy’s, with bowls of lemons, dish towels with lemons, etc.   I was impressed by the display, and intend to visit the thrift store next time I’m in that area.

Thanks, yes I am working on it slowly but surely. I am giving some things to my great niece who is moving into her first apartment and I will be making donations to goodwill. My grandson helped me throw some things away this morning. I have to have a knee replacement so it's very difficult going up and down the stairs so he was a big help.  I think I also have a heel spur now which doesn't help. Thanks for this post which has allowed me to vent ! Now back to work Woman LOL

I don't have any boxed new items that have never been used.

I do have a lot of "STUFF" we don't need or have used in a long time so it needs to go.

I need to get rid of everything we have not used or wore in a 6 months to a year. If it's been that long we won't be wearing or using it now. LOL!!!

I don't want anyone to have to go thru all our stuff when we are gone. Better to get some of it done now like my dad did.

I'm in the same boat as everyone else.  But this past weekend a broken hose on my washing machine pushed the magic button in me.  The floor was wet, so I had to move everything out of the basement washroom and into other rooms.  So......  I just started making big piles of what to keep, what to give away, what to sell.  Some stuff needed to be moved to the storage shed.  So this morning I cleaned out the shed, putting stuff in the piles.  Now that's organized, along with two rooms.  I'm going through my clothes "room" next.  I have a list of stuff to sell or give away, just get it out of my house.  Anyone want a treadmill?  Old golf clubs?

I'm on a roll, and it all has to go.

@chrystaltree   Funny to hear you only watch ShopLC, because that's pretty much the only shopping channel I watch now too!  Jewelry and gemstones have always been my passion, but at least that doesn't take up a lot of space in m home!
