@RetRN Yes, that's what I intend to do when I retire (soon). Like everyone here, my walls are closing in on me. I have periodically made donations, but I intend to go room to room (got to take it a little at a time) to clean out, once I have the time to do it. I don't mind getting rid of stuff, it's just all the time and energy it takes to do it when you're still working full-time!

This is a "topic" I always read because it seems the more I "purge" the more I find🙃. For me, I'm selective what I sell or donate BUT I need to seriously rid excess!
I always get good ideas how to "let it go" & realize someone can enjoy my stuff -- well soon "their" stuff😊
I am a a big sucker for home decor and dishware😳.
I wish I had "willpower" but it's hard! I'm trying and so far the only thing I haven't bought is clothes, shoes or home decor. Let's hope it lasts🤞🏻😊

So true witchy woman....we are going through this ourselves, trying to sell a few things with our local consignment shop ( real wicker chair and loveseat) owner said it would go fast, it’s still sitting outside in the rain two weeks later...if it doesn’t sell, she donates. I contacted several people I know, we couldn’t even give away stuff...totally free. Finally a friend of a friend came by with his trailer and took it all...forget having a yard sale, more hassle than it’s worth. I havent even started on our attic🙄

It's also a good idea to remember all the unfortunate folks who are losing their homes and/or belongings to tornados and flooding. There are lots of people out there who will really need some replacement items and clothing!

I encourage everyone to join us on the very long running thread What Have You Purged today? Lots of support for those of us who want to live smaller and lighter.Even 15 minutes a day, several days a week is a good way to start.
Last year I downsized for the second time, this time the kids are grown and out of the house. I still entertain smaller groups- much less frequently and a lot less formally.
It was hard work and had to be done in a matter of months, but the resulting change in lifestyle was well worth the effort.
Also, for encouragement I suggest reading the book, It's All Too Much! by Peter Walsh.
I love Peter Walsh!!!

I have a DH who , God forbid, puts up a screaming fit if I try to get rid of anything.
If he passes before me, I'm getting rid of everything, selling the house, and moving inland for good. Also north.

I am so glad I am not the only one with this problem. We are in our original family home, old retired folks, who know the day is coming when we will leave. My new mantra is “What was I thinking?” Stuff and more stuff. Collections of antiques, decor items, books, etc. etc. We don’t entertain formally anymore. You know the drill, English China, silver, Waterford, etc. Maybe the Queen will come for dinner someday? Jewelry up the yahoo, two full closets packed with my clothes, handbags, shoes, etc.
Someone said that they had thought it was ok at the time if they could afford it, but later saw the error in that thinking. I so fully agree. I am downright ashamed of myself. And DH has his stuff, like his workshop in the basement, etc. He has indulged me way too much.
We are starting to purge. The Vietnam Vets pick up many items. Other things are donated to Habitat for Humanity. Some things are kids have taken. My DD and DIL like jewelry, so I am offering them items, bit by bit.
We have always given to charity, but I so wish so much wasn’t bought, and the money given to the poor.

@JudyL Why not use your beautiful Old Country Roses china for everyday. You could dispose of the larger pieces if you wish and perhaps cups and saucers that never get used and keep the plates, salad plates, smaller bowls for your own everyday use and get rid of the old stuff you currently use daily. Sort of like treating yourself to the best! If your set has many plates, etc., you wouldn't even need to keep all of them. Keep perhaps a place setting for 6 and get rid of the rest.

@golding76 right there with you. I have so much jewlrey, shoes, clothes, purses that it actually makes me feel ashamed. Oh yes and makeup and skincare. I think it has been an addiction or futile attempt to fill a void. I don't know.

@Witchy Woman How about taking your things to a consignment store? You won't make much but better than nothing.
