At my job we have scheduled times for breaks, lunch, in and out.
If we are late it's an "incident" and it counts against us. We have to send an email to explain anything more than 2 minutes different to the assigned times. We are ranked by our adherence then get to pick our schedule in order of our ranking.
Strick?

You can be 10 minutes early as easily as 10 minutes late. Granted, everyone can get a flat tire, traffic, etc.; but it is the height of arrogance & disrespect to allow that behavior to run the company/supervisor, which is really what they are doing. It is the principle here that is important. Discipline & respect are words I hardly hear or witness anymore.

I have never heard of this policy, with schedules. Must be retail? I know when I worked in retail if I called in sick, I would get less hours on the next shedule.

I imagine many jobs in CS have to be strict with employees being on time. Banks, insurance companies, even shopping sites.
Employeess need to be logged on to their phone minute one.
Those not on the phone, but offer support to those phone reps need to be in their seat ready to help the phone rep.
When I call a number that I know the starting hours are at a certain time, I don't want the phone to ring for ten minutes.
So you better be at your desk on time to do your job. It's what you're paid for when your hired and given a starting time.
Unless you don't mind if someone from another country picks up to help you. I'm sure they are happy to be at their desk on the dot of starting time.
Don't complain about outsourcing, if you're one of those who stops to get a bagel, fill up your tank, takes the scenic route, realizes you didn't have a back up for your kids when they're too sick for school or daycare.....

I work in retail, one of the companies I work for has a point system. If you are more than 7 minutes late you are charged with 3 points, same with call outs, however.......if you have perfect attendance and punctuality for a month they 'credit' your account 1 point. You can not accrue more than 21 points in a calendar year from November to the same month the following year. Employees are ranked using that system and they use it to when honoring time off requests, particularly around the holidays.

People being late is inexcusable. Occasionally with a good excuse okay.

I used to work with a nurse who was a great nurse when he was at work. However, he rarely showed up and when he did he was late 100% of the time. Our boss always only assigned him when there was a stand by person available because his chance of showing up was very low. When he was there he was great - best nurse ever. The patients adored him , the staff hated him because his lack of responsibility made everyone else's lives difficult. Eventually administration decided to get rid of him and they "helped" him to get disability based on him having depression and a bad back. He is a wonderful person and when there , a great nurse, but people need to realize that their irresponsible actions affect everyone around them.
