I honestly can't remember the last time I watched network news. It has been MANY years - and yet, I manage to find out what is going on, without being subjected to the bias, yellow journalism, sensationalism, and all the rest of it.
REAL journalism has been dead for a long, long time.

If you don't watch the news or read the news or listen on the radio how can you be informed about what is happening? How can you be an informed voter? or just a good citizen?

@SharkE - it's really sad.
We don't eat out often but I think my hubsand and myself are the only two people in the entire restaurant or diner that don't have our phones in our hands or on the table.
This stuck with me and it made me so sad, we were out one night - a woman in her late 40's early 50's came in with her mother (I assume) from the time they sat down until the time we left, the younger of the two never put her phone down, never looked up. Phone in one hand, fork in the other.
I would give anything to be able to be able to sit across the table from my mother for a meal or a cup of tea.

I increasingly avoid an all news, all the time in-your-face-with-it thing these days, which I used to do to a degree. Any news is available online as and when I want to look for it. Huge news you can’t avoid anyway. Sometimes seeing a headline is enough, or a line or two. There isn’t anything I personally can do about bad news. I’m not an activist - never have been, never will be. I’m not out to save the world. If I’m motivated to search a story out I will.
When the local nightly news is on, as soon as it discusses certain events and certain people, I hit Mute. No need to raise my blood pressure or get sick to my stomach. Local news is what I want.
I’m informed; I know what’s going on in the world. I just don’t always need in-depth blow-by-blows. It’s like if you’re an animal lover and want news of animals, but half the news is abandonment, ill treatment and death. Yes I know it happens but I have no desire to know any details; I’ll pass.

I decided to do that in late November 2016. However, I caught minutes of CNN last evening and saw a mother being interviewed
My heart is heavy after seeing her cries of grief/anger/desperation/frustration.
God help us all.

still watch the news on tv and online.....from various sources......local, usa, worldwide. it is always a good thing to watch from several different sources.
i listen to local talk radio that deals with local and national issues. always interesting to hear various perspectives of the hosts AND of the people (your neighbors) calling in.
subscribe to 2 newspapers........baltimore sun and the wall street journal. i have the paper to hold AND of course can look up articles and information online.
we have always had the news on during dinnertime. a great way to discuss what is going on in the world with all ages. we then usually watch jeopardy also while eating and/or cleaning. we dont rush through conversations and we dont rush through dinner.

Try to stay abreast, from various venues-- print, online, TV. But for at least a couple of decades I've maintained a healthy skepticism about what is disseminated, and try not to get dragged down in the day-to-day. So often things that are bruited about as facts one day, are subject to modification and "nuance" and change, the next.
In the Nineties, I noticed that too much exposure could be disheartening and even depressing. So, we try to take the long view, keep an eye on history, and keep a bit of a perspective. Some days that's hard, but those are the days to spend extra time pursuing interests and activities that uplift.
And there's always good news salted in among the not-so-good, no matter what the times, in my experience.

@Shanus, we rarely watch the news any more. Almost two years ago, I was just disgusted with it, so I have the tv set for the classical music channel and listen to it as soon as I get up. If I leave our dog home, it stays on for her. Then, during dinner, it is on. I find it very relaxing.
I have other outlets to read for my news and I try to be informed. Most of us have enough common sense and know what makes sense and what is nonsense, so I don't need to hear any commentator tell me how to think.

I surely won't be keeping my head in the sand. I will continue to watch the news.
