@Shorty2U  I really wanted to like it........I happen to like Joy and admire her determination........however, that movie is a bomb, that's not her fault, she'd probably had made it a success IF she had more of a hand in it......it has a great cast, it just lacks a story line that pulls you in......................raven

A bomb? Not at all - the trades all have it projected to have a strong start this weekend.

It's a small "character study" type movie - it didn't cost a lot to make and it never was meant to be compared to the BO of "Star Wars."

"Directed by David O. Russell and starring Jennifer Lawrence, Joy is likewise also off to a strong start. The Fox dramedy looks to earn $7 million-plus from 2,896 theaters on Friday for a projected $20 million-plus weekend"

It was sold out yesterday.

This movie received only 58% on Rotten Tomatoes.  That's pretty bad.  Even "Krampus" and "Sisters" tallied higher percentages.

My son works in the movie industry and is home from 3 month assignment in LA for Christmas - he's going back for NYE. We always go to see a LOT of movies when he is around.

The last feature film he worked on was "Teenage Ninja Mutant Turtles" (not MY type of movie, and not really his type either!)

He saw "Joy" on a screener his roommate got as a member of the Screenwriters Guild and he wanted to see it again in a theater.

He commented, @PeterDM, about the Rotten Tomatoes rating. RT, he told me, skews towards large blockbusters and mass appeal movies - not smaller character study type films like "Joy." The poor rating surprised him.

Today we are seeing "The Big Short", then "Brooklyn" - which gives you an idea of what we enjoy.

NOT TRUE.

I'm VERY happy that the movie finally opened in theaters yesterday. There were WAY TOO many previews on tv, which is a TOTAL turn-off. Major overkill.

I'm amazed that you would care about ratings given by TV and newspaper critics - they are part of the big, mass media that you seem to believe is always trying to steer us wrong.

Since the MSM appears to be less than thrilled with "Joy" - I'm surprised you weren't first in line to see it.

Happy Holidays to you too.

Re: Movie "Joy" about Joy Mangano

It was clear that “Cindy” was Kathy Levine but who was “Todd’ – the host that could not work the mop? I wondered if it was Paul Kelly, the man that later lead QVC’s 50/50 product discovery tour around the country. He was a host back at that time and had the same physique. They were clearly casting for similar look and personality type in those scenes and Paul Kelly seemed to fit Todd’s character. Can you think of any other host it might be?

I was driving around doing errands a few days ago and there was a positive review of "Joy" on the radio--NPR, maybe the critics who work with Terri Gross?  There were some criticisms, but the review was quite friendly overall.

I don't go to the movies, so I won't see it, but it sounded like an interesting story.

Nothing will make me set foot in a movie theater, but I will keep this one in mind if it ever makes tv.  The preview looks like a lot of fluff, so it didn't interest me much.

No interest.  I wouldn't even know who she is if I didn't discover shopping channels.

Hangers.  Hmmm.  Back to the drawing board, maybe I'll get lucky, lol.

The movie has nothing to do with hangers - it's a movie about a determined woman who wanted to make a better life for her family - and never gave up.

A movie about EMPOWERING women.
