@decaf   I'm thinking 15-20 minutes if I  have somewhere else to go afterwards, but 30 minutes if I have the time. I've waited that long for a haircut, too. 


@Shanus  I waited about 30 minutes just last week, my appointment was for color and a cut.  I had another appointment scheduled after the hair stylist and when I informed her of that she seemed a bit miffed, like I was rushing her. Oh well.  I've been going to her about 32 years. That's another whole story, Lol.

i used to make appointments for nail services but the salons always took the walk-ins so i ended up waiting anyway.   one time i arrived early for pedi appt., nail techs were busy with clients in every other chair.  they ran warm water in the tub and i sat there for 25 minutes while the water went cold.  they said few minutes over and over.  walked out with wet feet.

@decaf   I feel like I'm beating a dead horse here. My hair stylist is the best I've found for cutting my short pixie cut. I've gone to him for too many years to remember before letting my hair grow out the last few years. When I decided to make the big chop, after 18 months of trimming it up myself, I ran to get an appointment with him.

 

He's in one of those "loft" situations...his own room and schedules his own apointments leaving enough time for each appointment knowing what services they've requested....leaving an extra 1/2 hour just in case the client decides to go a bit shorter, wants a completely different look than the time before, etc.  I still need to wait in car and call him and he texts back when ready for me to come up...never more than a 10 minute wait and it's usually because he's cleaning/sanitizing his room before he takes me. He's still wearing a mask (required by the loft salon owners), too. 

 

He has, at one of my appointment times, asked the client before me to return another time when she asked for unscheduled highlights which would have taken another hour or more and she had not informed him previously of that service. He's really good about keeping his regular clients happy and being sure they stay with him.  

 

In a small town, we don't have that many good salons and/or stylists, so maybe that's why I don't make waves.

@BarbiHollywood ....Nope, not grumpy.....I do not think should have had to wait....and good for you for calling the manager.

 

My story is similar but it was for a chiropractor appt.  I had an 8:30 appt...they open at 8:30, I was going to see him before I went into work.

When I got to the office there were NUMEROUS other people waiting and I asked the receptionist if they were all ahead of me, she replied yes!  They were all walk ins...I told her I would not wait and left.  I stopped later that day (had another appt.) and the doctor knew I had walked out earlier, he apologized but had no answer to the appointment people vs the walk ins.

I never went back.

 

I had back issues again and found out when I went to see another chiropractor (with an appointment) the office was FULL of people....that this is pretty much how they run their business.  Thank goodness I have been pain free for seveal years and have not had to deal with the issue.

 

I just do not under stand the policy!

I do not go to a nail salon, but I have to wait everywhere I go that makes appointments. I have a book in my bag and sit and read until it is my turn. I do not see an appointment time as a guarantee of when I will be seen, but that I will.

I think this is an instance where "should" is not relevant to the conversation.  

 

You have a choice of going to that salon or not now that you know the rules there.

 

You either, as the old saying goes, "cut off your nose to spite your face" by leaving, and that was your choice at the time, or did what you needed to do by leaving--and that's simply how you feel about it one way or the other.

 

Sometimes "should" has no bearing a the situation and you have a choice to make going forward.

 

Not saying this is good, but recently I faced a similar situation and it's simply a choice on me now.

I guess I feel like if you really don't care if your appointment is honored on time (or in a reasonable time) - great.  And if you don't care that walk ins get priority - then don't even bother to make an appointment - just walk in yourselves.

I'm not good at waiting, I would left.  I'm fortunate that there are 3 nail shops nearby.  My favorite nail shop takes appointments but I never make one because the situation you encountered does happen.  The never hand a client a client off to another tech, that wouldn't be right and what nail tech would want to take on a disgruntled client.

My salon has been dead until Memorial Day Weekend and everyone came out of the woodwork due to mask restrictions being lifted and the beginning of summer.

 

For the last year, everyone was sitting around waiting for their appointments.  Last Friday, I had to wait behind 3 people to check in.

 

I was happy for the salon and my technicians specifically as they have been struggling and doing Uber on the side to make ends meet.  My appt was delayed due to the person before me taking longer than usual as she was a new customer and had not had her feet touched in over a year.

 

They do not want to turn away new customers because so many of their old customers have not returned.

 

My first appt was about 10 minutes late and my appt with another technician was about 15 minutes late due to her taking in someone for a quick service.

 

They are trying to please everyone, old customers and new customers.  

 

I'm just happy they are staying in business and I hope business picks up permanently.  I'm glad a salon picked up my technicians when their old salon filed for bankruptcy at the beginning of the pandemic.  

 

I really like my technicians and have followed them to 2 salons.

I always make an appointment at least a day prior.  I've had a rough couple of weeks dealing with an elderly, sickly stepmother and really looked forward to today's 3:00 appointment for a much-needed mani-pedi.  I arrived on time, saw my tech was finishing up the lady in her chair, so I fiddled on my phone to kill time.  I saw that the lady in the chair had already had a pedicure and was apparently getting a manicure now.  She kept making the tech go back and forth to help her pick a color.  Every time the tech went over with the sample boards, the lady didn't like the color.  This went on for a while.  The tech came over to ask me if I could wait another 15 minutes.  I said no and left.  As I walked out, I thought to myself, go back in, just wait, you'll get your mani-pedi.  But it was the principle.  I walked to my car and phoned the manager inside to ask if the lady in the chair was a walk-in or had an appointment.  I was told she was a walk-in.  I then asked why the tech was scheduled with such a long appointment knowing that she had a 3:00 appointment coming in and also asked why the lady wasn't shown over to someone else to finish since the appointment (me) had arrived on time and waited a pretty long time.  I was told once they start, they can not pass to another nail tech.  I've never heard of that before. Not sure if it's their salon policy or a law.

 

So my question to you is this:  Should someone with an appointment be expected to just sit there and wait or should the salon have handled things differently?  I know there have been times when I've asked for additional services at the last minute but have been told they were too booked to accommodate me.  I also know that sometimes you have to wait, but 45 minutes isn't right.,

 

(Is it the end of the world?  No!  Guess I'm just grumpy today!!!)

 

 

 

 


The walk-in should have been asked to wait for the manicure, while you had your pedicure and manicure, since you had an appointment. This way the walk-in learns that she needs to make an appointment in the future and choose a color in advance. You were nicer than I would have been. I would have gone up to the walk-in and told her that you had an appointment and would be most appreciative if she would wait to have her manicure done until you were done with your appointment, particularly since she could not make up her mind about the color and this would give her more time to do so. Put the pressure on the walk-in since she is the problem. I have just solved this problem for myself. When I make my hair cut/color appt., I have my stylist make an appt. with the manicurist to do my toenails while my color is coming up (usually 1/2 to 3/4 of an hour. It works great and I only have to make one trip for both services. Smiley Happy
