Re: colonoscopy

My DH had the Cologuard test.  It came back positive so then he had to do the procedure.  They did find a tiny polyp and removed it.  Because he did the Cologuard the insurance didn't cover much of the procedure because at that point it was no longer preventative but diagnostic.

@Pecky

Appreciate your post, as it should give one yet another reason to have a Colonoscopy, which is $$$$. Few cancers can possibly be prevented, but Colon Cancer is one that can be for most. Way too many families lose a loved one, unnecessarily in my book.

Hello @Shelbelle ,

Thank you for making my point with your post about "someone you know" in reference to Cologard. Even though it worked, that "someone" ended up having a Colonoscopy. That is why Cologard, to me, makes little sense.

Positive results equal a Colonoscopy, Negative results equal a maybe

Hope you and your husband are doing well.

Hope the same for you too John, and your lovely Cindy. Yes, this person I mentioned was 65 and had refused to go thru the real deal, and then got forced into it, trust me a lesson was learned here.

Another pro tip (although I have only had this done once, so I didn't get the tip in time) is to go on liquids several days before.  I have a Vitamix, so I can still be blending up nutritious soups and smoothies, and I'm betting that it makes the output much easier on game day.  It should produce a squeaky clean colon.

Thank you Karen!

   I'm glad both yours and mine are over!!!!!

THey removed 3 polyps and because I have a "twisted colon" (who knew??) the sedation didn't quite sedate me.  I think I yelled a lot Smiley Sad

But, it's over and there are no problems (hopefully.  they did take a biopsy).  Now I'm on the 5 year plan.

Next time- propofol for me!!!!

I thought they always used propofol for this procedure?  What did they use instead if I may ask??

My husband had one recently and did the Gatorade miralax combo as I recall....and had propofol.

A co-worker of his also had one several months prior and he ended up in ICU as they perforated his colon during the procedure.

Theyve got to find a better way to administer this awful procedure.  Its like the stone ages.  American medicine has not advanced much since the 1960s. My personal belief is these tests are huge revenue machines and there is no incentive to get rid of the procedure.  My neighbor got one, woke up in the middle of the procedure, was in horrible pain but could not communicate verbally.

I know someone that woke up during a procedure as well. You would think they'd come up with a better process than having us drink this disgusting stuff.

My neighbor woke up but was completely immobile. She was conscious of what was going on but could not communicate her pain to the doctor.  She said "Never again" and hasnt been back for a colonoscopy in 20 years !  She is still well into her 70s and healthy.

@tsavorite  I’ve known two people that had their colon perforated and both went through a living hell for years after. I wouldn’t have another one done if they payed me to.

@Ketra

Your reply to @Reever,  " Smart Woman"!   A person in their 70's is not immune to Colon Cancer. But hey! It's her choice, but in my opinion "not a smart one". I am 80 and have a Colonoscopy coming up in early 2020, which will be #16 for me.

To each be their own
