@Effie54 wrote:I totally hear you and am in the same boat. After menopause, my cholesterol went up quite a bit. My numbers are similar to yours, and I take walks every day, watch everything I eat and take the right supplements. My doctor said that the ratio was fine. I found the only thing that really, really lowered it wise to things; the Life Extension fish oil and Jillian Michaels aerobics tapes. It lowered my total cholesterol by over 20 points in a 6 week span.
Glad to see you lowered your total Cholesterol number. While many like to base their blood lipid health on that number! The more important numbers are the ones too many pass right by.
Yes, they look at HDL/LDL/VLDL/Triglycerides. But when I ask most about the most important of all those numbers that indicate the best overall indication of their lipid health. Most say: "My Cholesterol number is up/down", that's it.

Thanks John. Exactly, it's more than just total cholesterol, it's all the numbers.

@SilleeMee I had the berberine chat with you before.I have since tried Piping Rock and will find out my blood work numbers on Thursday. My A!C and daily glucose has risen significantly since I started on a statin. I have lost 30 lbs since January, gone down 1-2 pant sizes and exercise 6 days a week for 45-60 minutes.Yet those numbers did not budge on my last blood test.Talk about discouraging. I had tried other berberine to no avail.I'm hoping the Piping Rock will help. I would love to have results like the lady's son.
I did get my new doctor to consider statins can raise A1C and blood glucose. He pulled out his phone and looked up the information. At least I got a doctor to listen to me instead of telling me it's hereditary. But there is no diabetes in my family.I'm hoping and praying we can reach a happy medium.
Thanks for the input.

I just came across this fascinating thread. My high cholesterol is genetic and went way up after menopause. I prefer not to take statins if I don't have to. I exercise and am learning to eat a plant based diet and get away from animal products. I think I might try the berberine. Thanks for the tips everyone!

One of the side effects of statins is that it can raise A1C in both non-diabetic and diabetic people.
Good luck with your blood work. As for the berberine...make sure you are taking the right amounts. At least 1000mg per day and some people need at least 1500mg per day. Try taking it before meals also.

@Estates , hi, just wanted to further elaborate regarding my son. My son is pre-diabetic Type 2. He eats no gluten as he has Celiac and he is a devout Atkins dieter. He also does intermittent fasting. He also exercises 6 times a week. He believes diet combined with exercise and berberine he has accomplished the much lower numbers.
In regard to statins. When I took Lipitor 10mg, I needed 1/3 more insulin (Type 1.) it is definitely a fact that statins raise blood sugars. My meter proved it to me.
Best of luck in your quest to have lower cholesterol levels...🌹🌺🌼

Check the thyroid numbers too. @SeaMaiden When you have a sluggish (Hypo) thyroid cholesterol level can be high.

@manny2 Yes. I will bring this up my next doctor visit. I believe my thyroid levels were on the low level last blood test. I will ask for a complete thyroid blood panel.

@Trinity11, just curious why not metformin instead of berberine? Both meds upset my stomach.

@tansy , his A1C wasn't high enough to need meds. He was borderline diabetic. Actually for 19 years now he has managed not to develop full blown diabetes.
He is taking the Berberine more for his cholesterol than the pre diabetic condition. But it had the added effect of bringing down his A1C also.
