@LTT1 Where I work there are a lot of abbreviations. The WEN forum I frequent has lots of abbreviations. The government is chock full of abbreviations (IRS, FBI, etc.).

I've had IBSD for most of my life. My condition is on the severe or extreme end of the scale so I deal with this most days. I do take medication which eases some days where conditions are not bad. For the most part, I'm a healthy eater and have learned what foods/beverages trigger an episode. I have found that yogurt helps ease my systems. I try to have one or two a day. My system also seems to function better on the mini meal schedule rather than a 3x a day schedule. Too much food at one sitting is overload for my system. It's takes time to figure out what will trigger an episode but be patent. Eventually, you will have a list. I am not symtom free on any given day but you begin to recognize the signs before an episode or bad day. Every person is different. I wish you luck.

@barb40 wrote:My S.I.L. has been diagnosed w/ IBS...wondering if anyone cares to share if you have this, what triggers a flare up? What works best to keep symptoms at bay? Do you try a combination of diet, excerise, stress reduction, and medication to help you the most? Thanks for any information and suggestions you may have!
@barb40 I have had many surgeries so my stomach, pancreas etc. have all been effected. For me, I take 3-4 of Andrew Lesman's Fibermucil a day, 1 of his Ultimate Flora probiotic a day and when need be I take Miralax. My doctor says I can take Miralax 2 or 3 times a week, if I have to. My gallbladder was removed years ago so it's even harder😃 for me. I can take the Miralax 2 times a week and then there are times I only take it once every 2-3 weeks. It depends if I eat fiberous foods or not. Each person has to find their own balance but the Miralax has changed everything for me.
When I get an attack (cramps, bloating, even a little nausea and I'm bad off), I take Donnatol (RX). It's a very old drug but the best. It stops the spasms and slows things down. It takes all the symptoms away and allows me to eat solid foods rather than only having liquids, baby food or for the past few years I use my Vitamix and liquefy everything, if need be. There are several other drugs that he can try before Donnatol that are not as strong.
It's tricky. I hope he finds what works for him.

I forgot to mention some of the food/beverage items that give me some relief.
Gingerale (regular or Tom Tucker mint)
herb teas especially mint medley and peppermint
crackers (not saltines because that seems to irritate the stomach)
Hope these are helpful.
