@kaydee50    Not if you're in pain and need help.  I've been there.  Spent 3 days in hospital after TKR, then 2 weeks in rehab center.

l had my TKR in 2018 ,  Unfortunatly it got infected , 2 weeks ago they took the whole replacement parts out and put a spacer in filled with antibiotics , the Dr called it like a bar of soap consistancy , so l have a full leg brace , l cannot put any weight on that leg , spacer can dislodge crack all sorts of bad things , and have to keep it perfectly straight , This is for 6 weeks !! l was in the hospital for 8 days and now home on pic line IV that l administer myself .  When this is all done l will be starteing all over with a new TNR  !  l really do wish l would of kept my old painful knee .  My original TKR l was in the hospital 2 days , because l could't keep food down .  Don't know how the infection got there , but if this don't work my leg comes off !   This is way way more painful than the replacement surgery .  Every one please be careful and not to have this outcome !

@judianne My father had TKR.  They had him sitting up in a chair while he was still goggy and he stood up and fell to the floor.  His knee became infected.  He had the knee taken out and spacer put in not once but twice.  In total he had 10 surgeries on his knee.  It was eventually fused.  He lived the remainder of his life in pain.

@Jrzgirl  I  had both hips and my right knee replaced.  The knee was done in 2019 and since then my gait has not been "normal."  I can walk without assistance; however, even after PT my walking pattern is not what I was hoping it would be.

My left knee is arthritic; however, I'm not experiencing any pain so I'm procrastinating scheduling that knee for replacement surgery.

If I believed having the left knee replaced would afford me a normal gait I probably would have it done.

Are you able to walk "normally" after your 4 joint replacements?  Thank so much for any info you may provide.

@pdlinda  I am not @Jrzgirl  but, I did have both knees and hips replaced ( knees in 2013, one hip in 2014 and the other in 2015). I walk normally... not like pre surgery on crutches and in terrible pain. I feel TOTALLY NORMAL. I now live with no pain from hips or knees.... I am one of the lucky ones who had a great outcome.  I would recommend you fix that last bum knee. Just having your gait off with the bad knee affects all your other joints and how you walk. Getting my hips and knees replaced  fixed my lower back that use to put me out of commission for days at a time.  I no longer have lower back pain now.  Please do think about replacing your bad knee if it bothers you. I think if could possibly help the outcome with your gait.

Isn't that the truth.  I believe what you are describing is the gold standard of TKR care and it may be a thing of the past.  I don't know if they do rehab anywhere anymore for this.  My surgery was in Jan. 2021 and I was told that they don't send patients to rehab any longer.  Not sure if this was due to the pandemic or insurance companies.  The hospital has been #1 in orthopedics in the country so I don't doubt their creds.  My friends who had the procedure years ago all went to rehab.  Visiting nurses and therapists were sent to my home. Luckily for me my husband was always there to answer the door to them because I couldn't have managed on my own.  If one lived alone this would be a nightmare.

Re: Different treatments for knee replacement surgery

@Bookplate    I had my surgery in 2011, and went to the rehab center mostly because I am alone with no support or help.  Even so, two weeks was too long.  When they wouldn't prepare discharge papers, I packed up and walked out.

@Kachina624 Well, clearly you were successfully treated if you were able to walk out on your own!  It's too funny that then the rehab institution wanted you to stay longer and these days good luck getting in at all.  I still think the ideal would be for one  or two nights in the hospital with the option of some rehab stay, if one lives alone. These drive-by major surgeries are just irresponsible IMHO.

Re: Different treatments for knee replacement surgery

@SeaMaiden Thanks so much for your info.

I have an appt with my surgeon next week and appreciate your telling me bout your excellent outcomes.

There is a matter I have to resolve regarding aftercare because I live alone and have no one to assist me except for a caregiver whom I hire.  Initial inquiries indicate that with the COVID situation caregivers are scarce.

Also, I always stayed in the hospital (an ortho hospital) for 3 days for my prior rplacements.  When I speak to the surgeon, I'll be sure to discuss discharge planning with him, as well.

Re: Different treatments for knee replacement surgery

@judianne your experience is nearly identical to a man I know from church. He thought his TKR would be simple. At one point, amputation was given as one of his options, but he said no. For months he was dealing with infection. He cannot put any weight on that leg. We've been praying that he'll soon be able to go in and have the surgery all over again. I truly think there were medical errors made, but they band together and cover up the mistakes so there's nothing he can do. At least Covid isn't as bad as it was when his troubles began.

Re: Different treatments for knee replacement surgery

@SeaMaiden   Yes, I walk with a normal gait. I now ride my stationary bike twice daily for 6 miles each time.  It was during Covid that I had the replacement, at that time they were cancelling "elective" surgeries".  My first surgical date was cancelled & I thought my second date was going to be cancelled, also.  However, my surgeon said my hip was so bad that he wouldn't allow it to be cancelled, as I'd lost the entire ball of my hip.  After the surgery I had a weeks worth of PT at home and from the I went to outpatient physical therapy for the time allowed by Medicare.  I was very diligent about doing all the exercises the therapists advised & I believe that aided in my recuperation.  Good luck with whatever you decide.  Living with pain is awful!

I am shocked.  A friend just told me her daughter-in-law had knee replacement surgery as an outpatient.  She was in the hospital for only two hours.  Me, I was in for three days then they put me in a nursing home for another two days.  I had no particular complications, just a lot of pain.  I am on Medicare and this person is not quite old enough but she has good insurance..

I live in SC and Greenville has a dedicated outpatient surgery center that does just knee and hip replacements AND they send you home the same day.
