I went to see a vein Dr. when my feet/legs were swelling. All test showed no signs of blockage or clots, but he told me to try wearing compression socks. I paid over $20. for a size large, & couldn't even get them on.

Yes I do. My PCP office suggested this as a solution a year ago.

I wear them now for walking each morning and I wear them on plane trips.

‘’They helped when I was having swelling of ankles and feet during an “episode” last year.

I wear light compression knee socks whenever I fly.  I also wear them when I know I am going to do a lot of walking.

My mom bought a pair of compression socks when we flew to Hawaii 10 yr ago. It was an 8 hour flight from Dallas.

They could be bad for you if you don't wear the right size or they have too much compression.  As mentioned, the Drs office will do measurements and tell you exactly what to buy.

I agree with @jlkz.  I can't fly unless I wear compression hose due to swelling, which is very painful.  Doctor says it's due to poor air quality in planes.  @Group 5 minus 1.  Note that they put compression hose on post-surgical patients to prevent blood clots.  They wouldn't do that if it was harmful.

Whenever I'm in the hospital, first thing the nurse does is slap on a pair.   They go up to my knee.   It's to prevent blood clots and blood pooling.   I don't have a diagnosis that would make me prone to either, it's just a precaution when flat on my back for a period of time.

There are all kinds of compression socks/hose.

Generally you don't wear them at night, only during the day.

Some athletes/runners wear them during the day but they are not the medical type.

They seem to have become a fad, or fashion statement.    Don't wear them if you don't need them and if you need them, buy the right kind, not something off the shelf somewhere.

Why are you asking?

Compression hose is helpful when you have to sit for a very long time.   Not sure it has anything to do with air quality.   It's to keep the blood from pooling in your lower legs.  It increases circulation and helps prevent a blood clot

Anyone here wear them? I thought they were bad for your legs.

Never heard any  of my doctors say compression socks "were bad for me", quite the opposite. Since I had 2 separate episodes of the deadly PE, and lived? They advised me TO WEAR THEM if and every time I travel by Airplane.

I wear them when I do my workout exercising and 3 times a week, ice skating sessions. Sometimes I wear them just because they feel good. Now I am not talking about TED HOSE(Anti-Embolism), I am talking only about Compression Socks. There is a difference in the "compression values as measured".

@GAQShopr53,

WHAT?  PE are about the most serious Vascular Disease a person can have, and I have lived through 2 episodes. Spent 8 days on Heparin IV Drip in hospital, and 9 days on the same for the other. If any Vasular Specialist said that TED Hose or Compression Socks are bad for their Vascular Patients? RUN, don't walk, and keep RUNNING to another Vascular Specialist Doctor!
