I couldn't agree with you more. Received my injection as soon as it was made available and I could arrange to get time off from work. My husband refuses the stick. He hates needles and has fainted on previous occasions. I get it. However, I've told him if he gets shingles and could have prevented it or had a much lighter case through having had the injection, he's going to not only kick himself, but quite likely be in major pain for years or the remainder of his life. He just won't get it. And this guy has an IQ of 161.

I'm going to try to remember to call my doctor tomorrow and see if she recommends getting the shingles vaccine, although I'm a bit leery of it.
I surely don't want to get shingles, though.
@YorkieonmyPillow There's nothing about the shot to be leery about. It's just a regular inoculation and just made my arm a little itchy for a day or so. Was not sore and I felt fine. Gives me a lot of piece of mind.

@sfnative These people like your DH who are needle-phobic apparently don't know that now they use tiny, thin needles that you can scarcely feel. I get quarterly blood tests and the tech uses a baby needle and I can't feel it at all.

I got the shingles shot 2 years ago. Just had a really bad case of shingles anyway. Found out it i
s very common to get shingles after having. The shot. You can also get it multiple times.

Two things to consider:
You may be too young to qualify for it, so you might have to pay for it out of pocket. Your insurer could tell you.
Second, next year hopefully Shingrix will be approved. It's a deactivated zoster vaccine and reportedly more effective than the current live vaccine, which works, I have heard, only about half the time.
I do understand wanting peace of mind. I'm waiting for the deactivated vaccine.
Didn't know about that, think I'll wait.

Not everyone who gets the shingles immunization will be spared getting shingles. And not everyone who gets shingles will be in pain for the rest of their life.
i had shingles once, when I was around 50... too young to get the vaccine. I am 63 now and have not had another episode. It hurt like you wouldn't believe, but my pain went away after I received medication and it never returned.
I have not received the shingles vaccine even though at my age I could get it now.

The Zostavax vaccine may be given to AI people, depending on what type of AI disease it is and what your doctor recommends. I have scleroderma and my doctor has recommended it for me.

Thank you, that is good to know.

All true, but not something I personally would want to gamble on, having known several people who have suffered with it. There's no way of predicting who will have a severe case and who won't, who will get it more than once, and who will have major after-effects and for how long - or permanently. People might be lucky...or they might not be. Glad I had the vaccine, and will get the new one if it doesn't cost an arm and a leg.
