Health Scare I want to share

A couple of weeks ago, while working on laundry room, I suddenly felt very tired, no energy.  Was forcing myself to work on it.  Then I started having symptoms similar to gallbladder issues (which I have had before).  Stomach ache, belching constantly, pain in right upper quadrant, nauseous.  I had no appetite whatsoever - could get down a couple of pieces of watermelon each day the entire week.  Went to dr last Wednesday.  Dr. did blood work, scheduled me for a complete abdominal ultrasound yesterday.  Last Friday I get a call that blood work shows I am "severely dehydrated" and that I need to get water in me immediately as my kidneys were in stage III renal failure.  (When I get busy, I hardly eat or drink anything).  I started drinking 50-64 oz of water that day and by the next day my symptoms were gone.  I did have my scan yesterday as she told me to go ahead with it.  Kidneys, spleen, aorta, pancreas, gallbladder and liver, all good.  My friend is the same way, can drink a couple of small drinks a day and is good.  She's now forcing water down.  It is a chore for me to get that much water down, but dr called today with my scan results and said it's imperative to drink 64 oz of water a day.  Drink your water folks!

OMG!  Thanks for this.  I constantly yell to myself to get better about water drinking because I am pretty much a camel myself.  Will definitely re-commit to that effort now.  I had no idea.

So glad you are okay.  Heart

Re: Health Scare I want to share

I don't have a problem drinking water when it's hot. Come winter I have to make sure I drink enough. Right now I drink a gallon per day plus it's so hot. I filled up my 1 1/2 gal jug with spigot in the refrigerator yesterday morning & again last night I drank to much. I'm the only one drinking it as DH does not care for the ice cold water like I do.

Take care. I always have a one of those insulated thermos bottles full of water with me all the time. Maybe if you carry one of those you will drink more water. I like those bottles because they keep my water cold & they don't sweat.

Yes, I started with the water thing many, many years ago when I was having bladder infection issues (if you've ever experienced that pain......well you will do whatever you can to prevent it).  Water is all I drink throughout the day (after my morning coffee, of course). About 8 years ago I also developed chronic dry mouth, so if I don't drink a lot of liquid I can't even talk, my mouth gets so dry.  I'm glad your issue has been resolved.......kidney failure is no joke.  Take care!

Re: Health Scare I want to share

I only have one kidney and I'm in stage 3 renal failure so I am supposed to really force a ton of fluids. I drink water or other liquids constantly. I can't understand people who don't drink water as it is such a habit for me .

I recall a day at work one of the doctors was bugging me to make a fresh pot of coffee but I was too busy. I grabbed a glass of ice  water for him, and told him it was a special new drink we are offering here in the ICU - no calories, no sugar, no fat.100% refreshing. Try it you'll like it.

BTW - you can also drink way too much water all at once so you have to be careful not to do that.

@151949  I am so sorry for the health issues you are currently experiencing.  My thoughts are with you.  Heart

Thank you for the good advice.  I've noticed when I do drink a lot of water at once, usually after mowing the lawn, it goes right through me.  Good to know.

If you have a Fitbit, you can set the activity reminder to drink water.

Back when I used to drink a lot of alcohol, I ended up in the hospital for severe dehydration. Thankfully those days are behind me now. But I learned what it's like to be dehydrated and it was not a good feeling.

Watermelon is all water but you were not eating anything but the watermelon.  You don't have to drink that much water now but it is good for you.  I drink 2 coffees a day which is water, then 3 or 4 cans of sparkling water and I am okay.  I use to drink the really large bottle of water when I was working and probably should still do it.   It is excellent for your skin when you drink lots of water.
