Top Tips For Learning To Let Go

Attachment to objects can make it difficult to let go. Here are a few tips to try to ease the pain:

– If the item does not bring you joy, is not used, or is unlikely to be used, then it should be removed. If it is broken, useless, tatty, and has no sentimental value, then it should be removed.

– The hardest things to throw away are gifts, as well as old stuff. Don’t feel guilty about getting rid of these when the time comes. The other culprit is miscellaneous bits and bobs- that a lot of people confuse for being useful- stating, “that will come in handy some time.” No, your rusty paperclips will not come in handy some time.

– Don’t try to go from extreme hoarder to extreme minimalist, overnight. This might be too much of a shock to your system. Instead, get rid of the easy stuff first, or set yourself attainable targets for de-cluttering. You can always go back for more later.

– If you struggle to throw things away, ask a friend or family member to come and help you to de-clutter your home. They will have a external and independent perspective that will help you to work out whether you are keeping hold of a load of junk.

Some great tips, Chili.  I still have a cast iron grinder set that I think belonged to my great grandmother, my grandmother, and I know it belonged to my mother (I saw her grind peanuts to make peanut butter and pork to make sausage.).  When my mother gave it to me, she made me promise never to sell it or to give it to anyone outside of the family.  I also still have her piano that she paid for for years on time so she would have a piano.  I know how much it meant to her, so I could never sell it.  Maybe someday, I will give it to a child who loves music but who cannot afford a piano.

And after all, if I never buy another one..I will have enough to last me a lifetime...that's IF I live to 153!

Fifty eyeliners . . . Okay . . . You win . .  but, I do get it, though.  I think it is being artistic to coordinate your makeup just like you coordinate your clothes and accessories.

mtc,

Glad to hear that your car is on the mend and soon will be back in your possesion!

I am sorry about the potential job disappointments.  Truly, it is THEIR LOSS!  Yea, verily, you shall prevail!

Thanks for mentioning the sales on corn on the cob.  What a great idea for the Fourth!  Here is Rachel Ray's recipe for Grilled Bacon-Wrapped Corn on the Cob.  It looked good and not-too-hard to me.  I looked for a similar recipe I posted before from People Magazine, but I could not find it.

Grilled Bacon-Wrapped Corn on the Cob

Grilled Bacon-Wrapped Corn on the Cob

Ingredients

  • 1/2 teaspoon sea salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon smoked paprika
  • 1/4 teaspoon cayenne
  • 6 ears corn, shucked and halved
  • 12 slices bacon

Directions

  1. In bowl, mix salt, paprika and cayenne. Sprinkle on corn; wrap each cob half with bacon, securing with toothpicks. Grill over medium, turning, until bacon is crispy, 20 minutes. Discard toothpicks.

Chili,

I have two questions for you:

1) What kitchen gadget/serving piece should mtc use with her Fourth of July Corn?

2)  What beverage should accompany the aforementioned corn?

VaBelle,

I saw this tee shirt and thought all the Kitchenettes should get one to wear as we show our solidarity with mtc on the Fourth of July when we eat corn on the cob in her honor.

By the way, I looked for corn on the cob shoes and socks without success.  The way I see it, it looks like a missed marketing opportunity.

I also thought that if you made the shirt a little longer and more fitted and fashioned it out of the same material as one of your scuba dresses, that it might shake things up in the Work Crush and/or Car Repairmen departments.  Your thoughts?

Good morning everyone

It's been a great week so far.  A lot of people are on vacation, so I'm getting a lot done.

We had our ice cream break yesterday at work.  This is something they did years ago in my building before I got there.   On the first 80 degree day of the year they would go out and buy ice cream and walk around the building handing them out.  I was told about this idea back in April and then it rained for 40 days and was too cold to think about ice cream.  LOL  Then we had Military  Appreciation Day and then the Kid's Day thing.  When I looked at the weather for this week, yesterday looked fantastic.  So I pulled the trigger, got the team assembled and ran to Wegmans around noon and picked up 400 bars.  I changed it to make people get up from their desks and come down to the lake outside.  People need to take a break and we found the our Chili Cookoff and the cake a few weeks ago that people need a reason to get up and take a break.

Wegmans could not have been more helpful.  I went to the Customer Service Desk and told them what I wanted to do and gave them my printout of my shopping list from their app.  My new friend Phillip took control, calls the frozen foods guy and he brought out 4 carts of ice cream, they loaded my coolers, Phillip checked me out on a private lane and had the helping hands guys take it out to my car.  All I had to do was hand over my credit card.  LOL  I wrote a letter to Wegmans on their website last night thanking Phillip for his exceptional work.  Wegmans is very good about responding to those quickly.  (I always like to send 2 nice comments for every 1 complaint I send, I feel like everyone complains but never compliments people).

I had dinner with my girlfriends last night.  We went to this Mexican place called Uncle Julio's.  It's a chain, but I'm not sure if it's a local or national chain.  I had been there for lunch once about 10 years ago and I didn't remember it being that good.  It was a nice night to sit outside and then the sun was in our eyes, so we went inside.

I also have a new recruit online.  We shall call him Golfer.  He has his kids this week and is going out of town on business next week, so it may be a while before we actually meet in person.

WC#2 finally shaved.  He must be going on duty again.  He said "the summer of love is over." LOL  He was trying to hire one of our admins into his department and I thought that between the 2 of us we had sealed the deal, but she chickened out in the end and is staying in her current position.  She hasn't said anything to me yet, I think she feels back.  I will try to catch her between meetings today to let her know it's all good.  She would have been perfect for that team, though.

WC#1 had his new hire start this week, so he seems more relaxed now that he has a full staff again.  We won't interact as much anymore as a result, but yet he was still in my office 3x yesterday.  LOL

re school supplies for kids

Thank you for reminding me about this.  We work with Northern Virginia Family Services to provide backpacks for kids for back to school.  I need to get the list from them soon as we usually do this in July.  I need to do something to get our # of backpacks higher.  We used to do 125+ and now we are in the 50s.  I just hate to use a raffle or something because it defeats the purpose of giving.  I will ask the team for ideas.

re decluttering

I got the decluttering bug 3-4 years ago.  I was reading an article in one of my many magazines and it talked about keeping things "just in case."  That was my lightbulb moment.  I had things like 24 champaign glasses from a NYE party I had 25 years ago and was keeping just in case I ever had another NYE party again.  LOL

Once you get going, it does get easier to part with stuff.  Of course, as always, as soon as you get rid of something you never use, you need it.  THAT IS THE LAW OF PURGING.

I'm better with clothes and shoes than household things.  I really do toss 1-2 for every item I buy.  For household stuff, I tend to move it to the basement to make sure I won't use it and then eventually load it all into my car and take it to donate.

re Kids Day

My girlfriend was telling me about her event and I am going to take some of her ideas for next year.  They did a piece on diversity.  That was brilliant.  We have a diversity and inclusion council so I will make them come up with something next year.

I really need to get to work.  I've wasted an hour already.

I intended to post the Eating Well recipes I just read in the July/August issue.  I will post those later.

Do we need corn recipes?  I see a corn theme here.  I have a TON and, sadly, I no longer eat corn on Primal Blueprint. It's probably the one thing I miss.  Smiley Sad

I have meetings all day today, including one that starts at 5pm.  Maybe something will cancel and I can come home before that meeting and do it in my kitchen.  < fingers crossed >

My makeup alone will need a Uhaul...a second one for my clothes, another for shoes...and two more for handbags.  But HEY....I LOOK GOOD!  Ha ha!!

RespectLife,

Truly, we are sisters from different mothers!  One question:  What about the coordinating jewelry?  And don't forget all those "gift with purchase" thingies-- or are they included in the "General Makeup Uhaul?"

UGH!  @Writer with Flair

Guilty!  I forgot all about the jewelry that has exploded beyond the lovely jewelry chest!

I guess because they are each a different 'piece', I didn't have them in the hoarding category....like the mulitple, repeat purchases of the exact same item of makeup and cosmetics!

I should really dig through that thing and ditch all the old pieces I don't wear anymore....well, just of the costume stuff...not the real gold!  That can always be sold!  LOL

All free samples and 'freebies' are in the general makeup category.  I had bags of samples since I order most of my cosmetics from beauty.com

My sis is doing a workshop at our conference next week and wanted all my samples for some reason for the attendees.  Whew...got rid of those!

The main cosmetic companies that do the gift with purchases are on my boycott list so I got rid of that stash to the women's shelter a long time ago.  I haven't purchased those lines in years.

Q never gives you a freebie hardly!  LOL

I finally convinced myself no matter how great a price...I don't need it!  I haven't bought a new purse in AGES.  Last December I just had to purchased a particular one.

Orrany had a purse named Annabelle...and that was mom's name!  It was right after she passed!  I'm using it now and it is a lovely, daily reminder.

Last year I purged my purses and sent the best to the women's shelter.  They sent a lovely note saying they were such beautiful, high-end bags...that they decided to use them as an incentive for the residents.  They could earn a pic of my collection!  I thought that was nice.

I need to purge purses again!

You SO get me!

Fifty might have been a low estimate though....

You people are way behind the curve on buying and eating corn-on-the-cob.  My DH is addicted to that..........we've had it at least 4-5 times per week since it started appearing in the grocery stores about a month ago.

I sometimes skip my share, beause corn to me is just another vegetable and can get boring after a while, but DH is apparently addicted.  He'll gladly eat my share.  I like it, too, but almost every day?

Prices have swung wildly on corn in our stores--it has been anywhere from 19 cents per ear to 25 cents.  I am amused when I ((instead of DH) have been picking over the ears at the store---it's almost a social gathering where people chat while they're shucking the ears right on the spot and throwing the husks into a big box that the store has provided.

I loved the little Latino lady who asked me whether I was going to cook all the corn I was buying on that same day.  I said yes.......but she advised me anyway that if the corn wasn't cooked immediately, it wouldn't be as sweet.  Hate to tell her, but DH likes it the day-old stuff, too, and I don't notice a difference myself.

The key to good fresh corn, I think, is not to overcook it.  I only boil it for 10 minutes or less, and sometimes we just wrap it in foil and put it on the grill for a short time.

If you're waiting until July 4 to eat it, where in the world have you all been lately?????
