Probably not a great place. On top of the fridge. I have a very small galley kitchen. I don’t eat much bread but SO, he eats it pretty regularly, and packs his lunch for work, so it goes fast. I keep English muffins and bagels in the freezer.

I keep all my breads in the freezer. It only takes minutes to unthaw when you want it. Storing bread in the refrigerator makes it go stale faster.

Freeze it & take out portions as needed, let defrost on counter or use microwave

I used to have a nice counter wood bread box, but after DS left for college we didn't use bread much and it was going bad. I read somewhere it shouldn't be kept in the refrigerator, so I freeze it. I just stick the whole loaf in - in the wrapper it came in.
When I go to use it I take the slices out (they easily separate), stick them in the microwave for 30 seconds on power level #5, which is a little higher than the defrost setting of #3, and I'm good to go. ![]()

I wish I had room for a breadbox. That is like my dream. LOL. So I understand your situation. I also have a crazy cat that for some reason will chew the plastic bag and the bread of any bread product left out on the counter. I also don't like refridgerated or previously frozen bread. I know, if toasted, it's fine, but I don't like it. Please just accept that about me. LOL
So long story short (too late, I know) I keep my bread in the oven or in the microwave.

@PA Mom-mom wrote:@depglass As others have mentioned, I keep mine in a L&L bread keeper (it comes in a three piece set with an egg and butter keeper K-54431).
We don't eat a lot of bread, and it has to last a long time. So, I also add a square of Fresh Paper (QVC doesn't have it right now, but it's on Amazon). I change out the Fresh Paper when it stops smelling like maple.
@PA Mom-mom : Silly question ? Do you remove the bread from the plastic bag and then put in the L& L bread keeper? I am the odd person because I don't like bread that has been put in the freezer or refrigerator. I am desperate to make the bread last longer. Trying to significantly reduce food waste.

@SouthernBee I leave it in the original bag and take out slices as I need them. I have also stored my homemade Irish soda bread in this container with the Fresh Paper. I put the homemade bread in a plastic bag. I have to stress, the Fresh Paper is necessary to make the bread last a lot longer. The L&L is great and much better than any other container, but I think the Fresh Paper extends the life much longer.

I keep my bread in a corner of my counter. It looks messy, but I don't care. But, when I think it might be going stale, I put it in a zip lock bag and freeze it. I will use it and other pieces of going stale bread in a bread pudding or Thanksgiving dressing. Very little goes to waste here.

We don't have much counter space so we keep the bread in a breadbox on the table in the dining area. We buy artisnal breads from a local bakery, it lasts longer than store bread.
