I have put the ring in the freezer when it doesn't fit well for about 30 minutes, it fits again. I use my IP weekly. I take the ring off after each use so it doesn't get moldy. 

The instruction booklet says to take the ring out and wash it after every use, so that's what I've always done.  I just can't imagine not doing it.
