I try to eat them every once in a few years. I just can't handle the fishy smell. It is too strong. I don't mind anchovies on pizza or in tomato sauce, but the smell straight from the can I just can't handle. I also think it is a generation thing like kippers or other smoked fish. I can handle canned tuna and salmon, but not smoke mackerel or sardnies.

I crush it and add chopped onions and black pepper and add to saltines. I use mostly the sardines packed in olive oil though I preferred the sardines packed in tomato sauce which is hard to find.

I can't get past the way the look laying there in their little can (coffin.)
When I was in elementary school there was a kid who used to bring them for lunch. It was so gross. His mother put them in a sandwich with nothing else, and I always thought they looked like they were sleeping in bed. This was at a time when you were assigned a lunch table, so I couldn't get away. Gag...
