The mention of sardines always makes me smile. It brings back fond memories of my dad who loved them! Funny thing...we rarely had fish at our house because he hated it. He use to say it was "the devil's food."..lol! Yet, he loved canned sardines and would eat canned tuna(no other fish, ever!). He use to eat the ones in mustard, with lettuce and mayo on white bread for lunch. My mom ate them on crackers. My siblings wouldn't eat them. I like them in mustard or oil. I prefer the skinless and boneless but will eat the ones with bones and skin also. I like them as a sandwich or on crackers but only eat them when I get a taste for them. Dh and dsons won't touch them. They even complain about the smell! I think they are delicious!

I haven’t had sardines in ages. When I do eat them I drizzle a little balsamic vinegar on top, right out of the can. When I finish eating them, I have to take the can to the trash bin outside because it stinks the entire house up if I don’t.

I used to watch my Dad eat sardines. He was like a surgeon. He would open up the sardine, take out the innards and back bone of the sardine. And then put the fillet on a cracker.
I liked watching him being so careful dissecting the sardine. I never ate them myself until I was much older. And discovered I really like them.
Until a guy I worked with, would eat sardines for lunch. But he never finished a tin. So he would just half halfheartedly push back the lid and stick the tin of sardines in the company refrigerator. So every time you opened the refrigerator it smelled like sardines. We asked him numerous times to at least put the can in a zip lock bag (available for free in the kitchen) but he preferred to do things his way. He considered himself a vegetarian but the one exception was that he ate sardines. And I know from the things he has done, that I really think he was trying to annoy everyone in the office. It worked.

Now I need to get some Sardines! Love 'em. Canned in oil. Shaking my head at the very Idea of removing the bones! They're the best part! when I was a kid i'd lay the halfs open and look to see if there was another little fishie inside. Back then I thought it was a baby, now I know it ws the last supper! The only thing i'm picky about is removing the little fins. It's a texture thing.

I love canned sardines. Always in oil. I mush up the whole can, never drain the oil out and scoop them out on to a saltine and add more salt.

Let us know if you ate them. I don't eat fish/seafood.

Like you, I tried eating them for health reasons.
Canned meat/fish is very popular in the south.
I mean we will can anything.
I grew up eating fresh fish, living on the coast.
There are so many positive posts here, I may have to try it again.
I love mustard, I may try the kind canned in mustard.
I also like the idea of fixing it like tuna salad, in fact I may add them to my tuna salad. I do eat canned tuna a couple of times a week.
I did try to deep fry them
This was a couple of years ago, I don't remember exactly what happened but I never did it again.
I eat whole cooked fish - either grilled or fried.
Just have a hard time with the sardines for some reason.
And yes, you need to eat the bones, that a big part of the nutrition, at least for me, I need the calcium.
I looked around a bit for some other recipes.
You can add mushed up sardines to a dip, like an artichoke or spinach dip.
I think the recommendation is 2 servings a week so put 2 cans in the dip and eat it all week.
There are not a ton of recipes out there!
I saw one making a sardine "salad" for a sandwich, the sardines were mixed up with mayo and pineapple marmalade. I don't know about that one.

No one in my family eats sardines. I'm very unfamiliar with them. However, I do want to try them. I might actually like them because I love fish.......I will report back.

mash them up with very finely diced onions and add vinegar. Pass the crackers!
