Thanks for updating us on how your "party" worked out, and it sounds like it was successful! There are a few of us seniors who just don't like to drive in the evening (DH and I live in a major city) and we also wind down around 5:00. Having a casual get-together in the early afternoon would be absolutely perfect for me. So glad it all worked out for you!

Does not sound cheap or tacky to me  However, I woud agree that the timing is not quite right for just dessert.  Perhaps adding something light like appetizers would be nice.
