After reading this it occurred to me that I can't remember when I last used a straw. I'm not trying to avoid them either.I don't even think about it.   How badly do we even need to use them?

Could you put a little drop of bleach in the water you clean the reusable ones with?

@Sooner, I find the straws I use when drinking coffee get stained.  I like to use a brush to make sure they are cleaned out completely.  The set also included a long handled water bottle cleaner which reaches right to the bottom of the vessel.  I like that too.  LM

Need, want, like....it's all relative I'd say.   I use the metal straws and they came with brushes from Amazon.
