@autumnnj When the rings were given to you, they had a meaning and purpose that no longer exists. Taking the stones and creating something else beautiful that you will enjoy is a wonderful idea.
I’m not divorced, but after 49 yrs. of marriage, I had my oval engagement ring, that had baguettes on each side, reset on to a small diamond band and a matching diamond wedding band. It didn’t cost that much because I had inherited a beautiful tennis bracelet I wasn’t wearing. There were enough stones to go around the engagement ring and make an eternity band. The platinum from my original settings were traded for the platinum used for the new rings.
I'm married too and I have reset my engagement and wedding (diamond) bands so many times I cannot even remember how many. I am not sentimental about "stuff." I like cool things. I have never liked the "engagement ring on top of the wedding band" look. So after many incarnations, I morphed all the stones into one ring. I love bezel set stones, so I sketched up a little drawing for the jeweler and had a bubble ring made.
The hubster is like me; not sentimental about "stuff". Wanted me to do whatever makes me happy.

I didn't have a large diamond engagement ring or wedding band, and considering what he did, my rings no longer meant anything to me. I sold them to a jewelry store and really didn't get much, although I didn't care. I guess it depends on the break up. I wanted nothing to do with any reminders and the diamonds weren't something that I wanted to keep as a reminder. I concentrated on healing my soul.

@autumnnj Have you considered getting it plated with a different color metal? What about black rhodium? Could you antique it somehow? I've been reading a bit about black rhodium this week and have found that you need to be careful that you have a thick enough plating on it or it will wear off, sometimes in a few weeks or months. You'd need to look into all that before deciding if this interests you.

I had a beautiful victorian looking mounting selected for the diamonds from my wedding ring set. In fact, it was done in a halo style (before it was called 'halo'.) I wasn't about to waste those diamonds!

My MIL gave me her wedding ring and said it was a tradition to pass it to the oldest son's wife. I had it made into a pendant with the solitaire in the center and two diamonds in six settings around it. Then I added a diamond for each child.
I haven't passed it on yet.

Sold mine and never looked back.

I would have the stones reset in another "right hand ring" style. My friend did that and she chose an estate style setting. It was so pretty. I also like the idea of a pendant or a pair of earrings.
