IMO, this is not a tipping situation.  I don't tip the furnace man, plumber, or appliance repair guy either.  They are employed by the company and get an hourly or contracted wage.

It depends.  If they are clean, courteous and helpful I may be inclined to tip.  They should clean up after the job, move furniture as needed.  I wouldn't tip based on the price of the job.  $10 to 20 a person is plenty.Tell them you are treating them to lunch.

Why do people feel they have to give workers their lunch? They will either go buy lunch or will have brought a cooler with their lunch in it.

I'm having electricians come out tomorrow to change out some lighting fixtures and don't plan on tipping them.  After that I'm having my house painted and won't tip the painters.  I see no reason to tip someone who is paid by their company.

I say that, but when I had my garage cleaned out I did tip the workers.  I doubt they make very much, and they seemed to appreciate it.

The office I work in was recarpeted last year.  No tip.  No drinks.  I just asked my boss if she should have tipped them...she looked at me like I was crazy Smiley Wink

If the workers are pleasant, polite and hard workers we almost always tip. Many folks we hire for work around the house are not highly paid, and if I'm happy with their work we tip anywhere from $5 to $20.

No way. I wouldn’t tip carpet installers.

My son does HVAC and he doesn’t accept or expect tips.  He also does not use the bathroom in a customers home. Occasionally, someone might offer him a drink.  Most of the time he declines, he always has his own cooler with drinks in his truck.

He also gets solications from lonely ladies.  I love to hear those stories.  When he and his co-workers get together, they tell the most outlandish stories about women who come on to them. Unbelievable.

Aren't they being paid to install your carpet? Why would you think they need to be tipped? They are getting a salary for doing a job. People are so over the top with this tipping these days. My cousin is an appliance repair man - he charges $85/hour and he says people still offer him tips. He feels guilty taking a tip over & above his charges so he thanks them but doesn't take it.

@151949  Yes, tipping has gone over the top. Last summer there was a tip jar at the produce stand and my dry cleaner has one out.

I would only tip if they went above and beyond laying carpet.  Like if they have to move some heavy furniture.  I do tip the guys who come to shampoo my carpet but only because I asked on this board and most poster said that I should because it's similar to house cleaners.
