Good heavens, I missed that one. They'll take a lunch hour and they'll off somewhere to eat. Why the heck would anyone feed them???? When we had our big house, I did give the guys who did yard work water and cold drinks. I put the drinks in a metal bucket and left it on the porch for them.

@sunshine45wrote:yes, i would give them a tip AND offer them a bottle of water or a can of soda.
Especially if they did extra, like cleanup extremely well,
or did closets with extra carpet, etc.

@151949wrote:Aren't they being paid to install your carpet? Why would you think they need to be tipped? They are getting a salary for doing a job. People are so over the top with this tipping these days. My cousin is an appliance repair man - he charges $85/hour and he says people still offer him tips. He feels guilty taking a tip over & above his charges so he thanks them but doesn't take it.
@151949 Yes, tipping has gone over the top. Last summer there was a tip jar at the produce stand and my dry cleaner has one out.
Yeah, my dry cleaner has tip jar out too and lots of people stick a dollar bill in it. I don't know why....I don't. We send our laundry out to be done and I do tip the delivery woman...$2.00.

No...I just had carpet installed...the thought never crossed my mind.

I had carpet installed last summer. The guys did me a favor & halled away the old carpet & padding. They took it off the property & disposed of it for me.They told me not to tell the boss because he would charge a hefty fee for the service. DH tipped them for doing it .Otherwise, I wouldn’t have tipped.

Yes I would because even though some say "their getting paid by the employer" I always tip something. When a great service is done at my home.
For instance, the guy who did my flooring for 6 days came at 8:00 am - left only about 1/2 hour for lunch or to dump debris. Some days he was here until 6. I tipped him well he was exceptional, neat & deserved it!
The only one I didn't tip was the roofers
because there were about 10 of them!

Unless they are delivering your carpet and you are installing, yes, tip, otherwise, if they are putting it in, no.

For me, it depends on the situaion and the persons involved. If a job is done correctly and my home is respected...then yes, I would most likely tip.

We are having carpet laid in my mom's house next week.
I was considering whether or not to tip so this thread is a very timely topic for me!
We (mom and I) will be moving all furniture and other things out of the rooms, and putting everything back ourselves.
We are being charged for them removing (tear out and take away) the existing carpet.
We were told that they would charge to move any furniture. We asked, since we are replacing the kitchen floor at the same time, about the fridge. We can move it, but to where since all the floors will be torn up at the same time. We were asking just to be sure it wouldn't be in their way. My only concern was moving it back in on the new floor and scratching it.
We were told they would move it but charge us like $20 to do it (and this would be like moving less than six feet, one way, back into it's space after the new floor was laid). Each item would be charged similar to this.
At this point, I feel we are paying extra for things like tear up, disposal, moving things etc. and I don't plan to tip when they are being paid for their work plus all this too.
We'll see if they go above and beyond and what happens. I haven't ruled out tipping totally, but we are being charged for every little thing already, so.....

Like others have said, it depends on the quality of the service for me. A couple years ago, I had a sofa replaced. I paid for the delivery, and the guys came, took away my old sofa for no charge, and were in and out quickly and efficiently in about 5 minutes. They were professional, kind and on time. It was a pleasure to give them each a $20 bill, as I felt their extra attention deserved my extra gratitude.
About a month ago, I had another sofa replaced, and it was an annoying production. They charged me for the removal of the old sofa this time (same furniture store, but different delivery service), and the guys were bumbling and unprofessional. They couldn't figure out how to get the sofa through the door. They were making me nervous, because I thought they were going to bump a wall, and they just didn't have it together. I did not tip them, and in fact, after they were here for 30 minutes, I felt like they should be tipping me for the annoyance. I don't care if you're a CEO or working the drive thru window at Taco Bell. Everyone should always behave professionally when doing their job.
