I'd rather see that space closed in and used as storage or a closet.

I think this homeowner wanted to do something with the bare space behind the stairs and this was an economical, decorative, although, IMO, not a good way to do it.

To make the bookshelves look like a legitimate reading area, the owner places a chair, table, and stool there of which no one in my family, nor would I, use them when there are other places in the house more comfortable.

It might have been better to place more interesting small knickknacks arranged creatively on those shelves, leave out the books, chair, table, and stool.

 i don't care for this at all.  it's uncomfortably cluttered.
