Open concept is definitely my preference.  It gives me a feeling of actually "living" in more of my home and makes it feel more spacious.

I don't like having the kitchen open to the eating area.  I have it, but I don't entertain often, so it doesn't bother me.  My mother entertained a lot, and her kitchen was open to the dining area.  She tried all the time to figure out how to close it off but never came up with a good idea.  I think this trend has been around for a long time, and will soon go away.

I don't mind a little open, but I am not one who likes the whole Open Concept. I still like individual rooms and that separation of rooms......I also still really like a formal Dining Room....I like the separation a little bit of the kitchen.....

Re: Open concept or not

[ Edited ]

Absolutely do NOT like open concept.

I prefer individual rooms with doors and walls and specific uses.

And I can't imagine why anyone wants a giant kitchen or bathroom.  Smaller the better for me.  So much less to keep clean.

ETA:  I don't like lots of "natural lght" either.  I'm sensitive to bright light and prefer artificial lightng that I can regulate.

The more open the better for me.

We had a tradition Williamsburg colonial house with the formal living room and dining in the front of the house and the kitchen and family room in the back of the house.  That house was built in 1987 and the kitchen and family room were open to each other and I loved it, that's where we spend 99% of our time.  The living room was never used and the dining room was used three times a year.  We retired, moved to NC and are waiting for our new house to be built.  There is not formal living room or dining room, the kitchen, great room and dining area is one big open area, all the houses being built are being built this way.  I sold, donated or gave away all my traditional cherry wood furniture, won't go with this coastal style home.  Whether it's a trend or not, we love this concept and we will be using all the square footage in this house, unlike our other house, which was too formal and didn't suit our needs anymore.  It's a very casual house.  I think our other sold so fast because it was a blend of the traditional and open concept.

This is exactly why we love our open concept. Our kitchrn nook eating area is actuslly as big we a lot of formal dining rooms. The only walls we have are to the laundry room half bath and bedrooms.  It makes it so easy to clean also. We have no wasted space which is nice. No rooms thst arent being used.

I cannot imagine living in a home with a kitchen that is not part of a larger living space. We married in the 70s, and even our first home had a large, wide-open kitchen/dining/living area. I suppose there are still some homes, vintage or new, with cut-up, dark,  set-apart rooms? Depressing to me. To each her own, but it does seem that most people seek airy, open spaces which allow shared light, views, and breezes.

@libbyannE  When I said I don't like kitchens open to dining rooms I didn't mean I liked a closed up kitchen.  I like a kitchen with an opening to the dining room--not a door--not a wide open space.

You dislikers would hate my home then. I have a total open concept. My "rooms" are defined by how I place my furniture. It works for me. Everyone seems to love my home so ....

This is exactly how our house is.

My preference is an open concept house but as other have stated......not one HUGE OPEN room but more like open concept for the living/family room and the kitchen.
