Years ago I reported a neighbor for having a rooster and the matter was resolved by the town.  I also had to report  about their two barking dogs that woke me up daily for weeks.  I love animals and know that they aren't the issue, the people who own them are the problem because they are inconsiderate and arrogant or just plain stupid.

Now I have neighbors who are constantly doing out door projects, not emergency repairs but frivolous situations.  The hammering and sawing is enough to drive me crazy and it goes on for weeks on end all day, even weekends.  I can't hear myself think.  Noise pollution covers a multitude of situations.

Good luck with your issue, Sweetbay magnolia, do not give up as frustrating as it may be.

I will call again.  I have the inspector's direct line.

And again and again and again....also call the mayor (or town council president). Call your animal enforcement officer. If no action, call the chief of police (disturbing the peace, noise ordinance enforcement). You've spoken to the neighbor, no results, now the people who enforce the ordinace need to take action. You're a tax payer, you contribute to their salary. Be firm, be courteous, be persistent.

Don't laugh. I did all this and the problem was solved.....eventually. They start to resent the neighbor(s) after all their "reasoning" has failed with the jerk(s).

One year it was a rooster that woke me up every morning at 4 am. The next time it was a flock of huge hens who roamed through my yard digging holes and terrorizing my blind dog. Results: rooster gone, hens behind chicken wire.

@Sweetbay magnolia  Good for you!  I only asked because our state just passed a law that no local code violations will be investigated unless the complainant identifies themselves.  The only exception is safety violations.

@decaf & @Sweetbay magnolia I know what you're going though.  I live in a residential area where everything is zoned Residential.  People in the next block got two goats.  Before I made a complaint with our county zoning office, I checked and sure enough, the property has to be an acre and a half to house farm animals.  I made the complaint, received a confirmation from the county that they would look into it, and the residents had 30 days.  It's been over 30 days, and I see the goats are still in their yard.  Also, these residents found out from the county who made the complaint and informed me they are getting chickens as well!  I haven't decided what my next step will be.  Sad people think laws don't apply to them.  What a different world we live in.

@walkingalOh no, I feel terrible for you.  If you made an  anonymous complaint, how did they find out it was you?. Do you know if the code enforcement officer told them?  It had to be them.

You're so right when you say people don't think the laws apply to them. Because your neighbor was tipped off, now they're threatening you with more farm animals! If it was me, I'd be reaching out to with the manager or director of that code department and demand an answer what happened to your anonymous complaint. I'd also send an email to my city or county commissioner and the mayor about the situation. They've paid to uphold the law and protect you, not put you in a more vulnerable position.

@decaf  The people with the goats got my name and address from Code Enforcement.  No where on the Code Enforcement on-line complaint site does it mention anything about confidentiality.  I complained to them as well as to my county delegates.  Haven't heard back from anyone.  As I said, I don't know what I'm going to do.  My goat complaint is on file with Code Enforcement.  And they did contact those residents.  You can see my complaint and the County's response on line.  They had until the middle of August to get rid of the goats.  That's all I'm going to do for now.  We have other problems in our neighborhoods we're dealing with.  You can see nobody cares about us.  And you can't count on the government.

@walkingal   I'm a bit confused, are you saying that because the county site didn't mention anything about confidentiality, you didn't think it would become public record?

Do you have a specific ward or council member for your area? If repeated phone calls don't work, think about attending council meetings. And find out how you go about speaking about your concerns to them. Some communities require you pre-register with council before you can bring up an issue.

Hear ya. I had a neighbor who had a rooster who crowed several times a day. He did not limit his crowing to the am.  The rooster used to raom around in other people's yards , even mine.  One of the other neighbors has dogs  in a fenced yard. Well, I don't hear that rooster anymore . I do not know  for sure but took a guess that the rooster wandered into the wrong yard.

@SurferWife - I really hope you're being (not so) funny.  You do know there are laws against animal cruelty?

Wow, from some of the comments here, I'm glad I live where I do - in the country.

Same goes for those who talk about dogs killing other animals.  If I ever found out about that, I'd be reporting it to the police.  Wonder how the owners would feel about their dogs being put down?
