Given this is really more of a dining area, I much prefer the new use. However, I don't think the dining room would look so bad if the junk were removed and it were staged properly for the photo. The artwork is also terrible.
We are assuming that the residents have a place to eat in the kitchen. If not, they are SOL.

@50Mickey wrote:Definitely like the library better than the dining area. That really wasn't a dining room but an area. We downsized 3 years ago to a smaller house with open floor plan. I miss my dining room. We have a dining area off of the kitchen. But now we are cooking, eating and living in one large area.
We have a new home with an open floor plan also. I don't like at all.
Builders have changed to open floor plans because they are cheaper to build.

I would much rather have a Dining Room over a Library.
I would want the DR shown redecorated and I would be happy..as is it just looks messy.

The only things I like about the dining room are the shutters on the window. Otherwise it looks like a dumping ground for everybody's junk.
I like the library.

@Sunshine KateJust to be clear, these aren't my transformation photos- just a designer that I follow on FB.

I like the British trend of having a "diner", a sizable table with plenty of seating in the kitchen often including a lounge area. Makes the kitchen truly "the heart of the home".

What is that picture hanging over the books? Strange. I could get picky but I won't on what I would change but this looks much better than the dining room.

As long as you have another place to sit down and eat I guess is fine.
The original dining area is not very attractive IMO. The table & chairs are nice, but the rest is not my style. The new library space looks nicer, but I don’t like the artwork hanging in front of the books.
In our house, we removed the wall separating the dining & kitchen. Both rooms were small and cramped. We eat in the “dining room” everyday for every meal. There is no table in the original kitchen area anymore. Everything is more open.
Our 3rd bedroom is our library & music room. Bookshelves, stereo, and my guitars are in that room.

I like the after but would add a rug under the coffee table to break up the wood floor.
