I was so sorry to learn only today that writer Julia Reed died over the summer at 59 after a long cancer battle.
I had posted images of her New Orleans apartment a while back, that some might remember:
Exuberant, hilarious and gifted at design, "Mississippi's Answer to Dorothy Parker" had lately built a small cottage in Mississippi called "Delta Folly". It looks like a wonderful little retreat, and apparently she had two years to enjoy it.
Doesn't it look huge inside? I expect that has to do with the high ceilings, for one thing...
Her rooms were always traditional, always filled with her antiques, heirlooms and books, but her light touch made them seem livable to me. I love the "under-dressed" look of the windows, with just unobtrusive shutters at the bottom. And the plants and simple terra cotta pots mixed with gilt, marble and precious antiques. High and low!
Southern comfort.
Takes on a romantic glow at night!
Her interiors always left a feminine, bookish, and yet cozy feeling to me.
I think of her style as colorful, and infused with her personality.
In this small house, her dining "area" was also her library.
Colorful, charming kitchen.
I'm guessing this spacious bedroom is the only one? At least, none of the magazines show a second bedroom...
The back door and mudroom, complete with anxiously awaiting sweet pup... This seems so poignant to me. Knowing how she felt about her doggie, I'm sure she made excellent provision for him.

I love every room in this cottage!

@Oznell I just love this. Not loving the canopy but otherwise, really, isn't this anything and everything one could need in a home? It is for me. I covet and I mean I really covet that marble topped table. I also greatly appreciate all those shelves and the Sheridan style settee in the bedroom, among other things.

Comfortable, low-key, and yet elegant in a quiet way. I love this beautiful cottage!

What a beautiful home. Love all the antiques and books. It is not pretentious but very warm and homey. I could move right in!

So warm and welcoming. Too bad she didn't have more time to enjoy it.
I love her use of high and low end furniture and decor. It just evens everything out perfectly. Not too stuffy and not cheap looking.

So quaint!
But what haunts me is the doggie's eyes. As if it knows....
