Am I the only one who cannot stand the massive, dark, overstuffed recliners? They eat up the space in homes, yet so many couples own two. The attraction to those things has always confused me. Why not purchase comfortable, leather wing-back Lazy-Boy recliners which would take up a fraction of the space?

To make the ceilings seem higher, place window treatment rods quite a bit above where the window actually is at the top. This give the illusion of longer windows and makes the room seem more spacious.
This is a decorator tip I read on the lovely blog by Susan Branch.

@AuntG It is true that light colors will make a room look larger. Also mirrors on a wall, that is a mirror will give the illusion of the room being larger. Always keep the ceiling white. ![]()

Using mostly one lighter color with small pops of a brighter color in pillows, area rug and art work.

Glass table tops fool the eye. Their transparency seem to take up no space.

I've seen this is so many decor magazines lately. It was the first thing I noticed in pictures. It really makes a statement.
I am going to do this with my shower curtain rod.

@BirkiLady I too despise recliners. If you must have one get one that looks like a regular armchair!! I hate those poofy, over stuffed recliners (with cup holders!!!) that look like whoever lives in the home is addicted to TV.

Over decorating . Keep it simple and tasteful and you will also find that things stay cleaner and appearance.

@itsmetoo I so agree! Also, fewer pieces of lager furniture look less cluttered than seveal pieces of smaller furniture.
Sometimes chairs or chests with legs give a room a more spacious look as well. Or even wallpaper with a design that makes you feel like you are looking through it into the distance.
Sometimes put up a dark wallpaper with a design in a tiny bathroom and it makes it feel larger! Really! It fools the eye and dark colors recede, so the light walls seem to be more in your face in small bathrooms, powde rooms.

I have bare wood floors, and use no rugs other than inside the exterior doors and in front of the master bath shower. Bare floors not broken up by rugs give the feeling of more expanse.
Lighter walls also - keeps it lighter brighter and seems to open the space.
Large framed wall mirrors also make a space seem larger.
Keeping the window treatment a lighter color and more sheer.
Going with lighter colors for any throw pillows/throws also make a big difference lightening up upholstered pieces or beds.
Not a lot of nic nacs everywhere - basically the simpler the better. Clearing the floors of unneeded anything. If it does not serve a purpose for something, put it away somewhere.
