The insurance company told me if lightening is bad enough a surge protector won't help no matter the quality.

An IT person told me the same thing.

Re: Advice On Purchasing Surge Protectors

I have a whole house protection unit installed next to the power breaker box in the basement, however, it may not protect if a huge power fault happens - but for normal surges after a blackout occurs ...it should take the hit (and then burn out) instead of your refrigerator/stove/TV, etc. A new unit will have to be installed for future protection.

Utility company does not install these units - call your favorite electrician. Box and installation runs around $400 in my part of the world. (for homeowners only - not tenants)
