Your "Unboxing/Unbagging" Routine?

When you get your item from QVC (or other online retailer), what is your usual routine when it comes to opening and trying it out?

When the package comes in, it is usually during the afternoon.  I just let it sit until the next day if I know it's clothes.  Open right away otherwise.

For me, if it's clothes that touch my skin, I always wait until after my shower to try on.  I first smell the item.  I've learned not to assume smells, especially chemical, will go away in the wash.  Then I try it on.  Usually, I'll go into my closet and see what will go with it.  Then if I like what I see, I'll check the seams, buttons and zippers for defects.

If it's a jacket or shoes, I'll try that on right away.  Sometimes if the shoes are "iffy" I will wait and try them on late in the day when my feet have swollen just to be certain they fit.

If it's a kitchen item, I'll wait until I empty the dishwasher (if dishwasher-safe) and then unpack and inspect for cracks, etc.  Then wash with that night's full load.

If it's an electric, I'll plug it in and try all the buttons.

I always keep the packing materials in case it doesn't perform as advertised.  I've seen so many regrets in reviews of people who threw out the packing stuff just to discover the item is a dud!

If I'm unsure about an item, I'll repack it and let it sit for a week or so while I think about it more.  Sometimes trying it out again.  Usually if I have to do this, I end up sending it back.

This routine has worked well for me.  What works for you?

Ordering so much less if at all and sending things back.

Open everything as soon as I get it.  Inspect it, try it on, try it out, etc.  Simple.

I don't order as much from the Q as I used to, but I usually open my delivered packages from any retailer right away unless I'm getting ready to go somewhere. I try things immediately, and I can usually make decisions very quickly about keeping them or not.

I definitely do the smell test even when shopping for clothes in stores. I learned that lesson many years ago when I couldn't get a chemical odor out of dark wash jeans I purchased. Strong odors aggravate my asthma, but even if they didn't, I wouldn't want to have that smell on my clothes.

I've gotten more picky, too.

1) Check address to make sure it was delivered correctly.

2) Unpack and find invoice.

3) Make sure invoice and items match.

4) Make sure items are operational and fit my needs.

I usually open right away and try on when I am in the mood, if its something I am excited about I will try on right away.

Not necessarily a routine ... so much depends on the contents.

Clothes - open and handwash and hang to dry.

  • Food:  I order all my canned goods by subscription from Amazon (amazing how much I save!)  Those items are stacked in the kitchen until I"m in the mood to put them away.

  • Canned goods I bought to donate to our monthly food drive usually sits on the counter until I'm going to bring it over.

  • Toiletries ... into the linen closet

  • Books .... opened and stacked on the coffee table.

  • Yarn.... opened and stacked in the box next to the coffee table.
  • I get a lot of miscellaneous stuff related to various groups / activities I'm involved with.  That usually goes in the tote with other related articles.

Two clothes orders are out for delivery.  When the package room emails me they arrived - I'll go pick them up.
