@timeless wrote:When you get your item from QVC (or other online retailer), what is your usual routine when it comes to opening and trying it out?
When the package comes in, it is usually during the afternoon. I just let it sit until the next day if I know it's clothes. Open right away otherwise.
For me, if it's clothes that touch my skin, I always wait until after my shower to try on. I first smell the item. I've learned not to assume smells, especially chemical, will go away in the wash. Then I try it on. Usually, I'll go into my closet and see what will go with it. Then if I like what I see, I'll check the seams, buttons and zippers for defects.
If it's a jacket or shoes, I'll try that on right away. Sometimes if the shoes are "iffy" I will wait and try them on late in the day when my feet have swollen just to be certain they fit.
If it's a kitchen item, I'll wait until I empty the dishwasher (if dishwasher-safe) and then unpack and inspect for cracks, etc. Then wash with that night's full load.
If it's an electric, I'll plug it in and try all the buttons.
I always keep the packing materials in case it doesn't perform as advertised. I've seen so many regrets in reviews of people who threw out the packing stuff just to discover the item is a dud!
If I'm unsure about an item, I'll repack it and let it sit for a week or so while I think about it more. Sometimes trying it out again. Usually if I have to do this, I end up sending it back.
This routine has worked well for me. What works for you?
I'm surprised you have a "routine".
Actually, what surprised me most is that you let something "sit for a week while you think about it". What could possibly take that long to make a decision about?
Years ago I changed my basic criteria. "Liking" something wasn't nearly good enough ... I have to LOVE it.
I can tell immediately if I LOVE something, or it goes back. No big deal, and maybe my return is exactly what someone else wants, so I don't dawdle when it comes to sending things back. Out they go.
Why would anyone wait, holding on to something they can't even make a decision about? It's obviously a "no".

Open the package, look at it, try on if necessary, wash if necessary, use when need arises.

No routine here, when we have a minute it gets opened and I try it out. Because of stocking the motorhome we've had so much coming from Amazon that there has been a stack of boxes in the living room.

I like to unpack right away. Get it over with and put away or in laundry. It isn't going get any easier, so just a chore to tackle.

I rip open any and all packages straight away. I put the packaging to the side and then check out the loot and try on any clothes or shoes. I make my keep or return decisions and then either package it up straight away or put the item away.
If I plan to keep something, I still keep the packaging for a while until I am sure. If I have any returns, I do it right way. Unless I know more is coming, then I will wait. Save it all for one trip to the post office.

I just realized I did have a rule .... whenever a box came into the house, it was Bogey's box for the first 24 hours, no exceptions, even if I wanted to send it back.
After Bogey had made a decision about whether he wanted to keep the box, I'd take it from there.

Living out in the country and working from home, I only go into town once a week or so.

Is Bogey your cat? dog? hamster?

"Unboxing routine? LOL, it sounds so ceremonious."
I really look forward to my packages! The routine for clothes just prolongs the anticipation!

"i like to examine and try on my purchases alone."
That's like me. I want to give the item my full attention without a "peanut gallery" commenting.
