The Tiffany Haddish thread in TV and Movies is a prime example of what the OP is describing.

OMG @JaneMarple, I just hunted down that thread. By page two, I found myself reading about Kim Gavel!!! I felt like I was in a pretzel factory. ![]()

People like to hijack a thread for their purposes. It's easier than starting their own thread.

Thank you, the scolding and preaching gets soo old and yet when you are on the other end of it......you are supposed to post gifs of unicorns and rainbows. Umm, don't think so, lol.

But an outright insult such as "Educate yourself!" which I've seen a few times, a rude assumption to make of a person's knowledge base, or "Spare me your opinion" which is another way of saying shut up -- these things are so unneccessary. People don't think before they post because they get caught up in their own ego need.
We know this. It's like watching someone struggle for air. Sometimes it's smart to let them get their breath, sad as it is, rather than choke them off.
@Free2be WOW! This post hit directly at me. I know I've written "Look it up and educate yourself." In all honesty, it didn't occur to me that was an insult or an "ego need." If other posters feel I'm guilty, I offer my humble apologies . . . with an explanation. Comments like that, were simply meant as educational.
I'm an avid reader and always learning more. It's in my DNA to search for additional information and answers. When posters skip past something that has been written previously or they could Google the information, I'm annoyed and/or frustrated by their expectation of having someone else find the answer for them. Thus, I do encourage others to "Look it up and educate yourself."
Currently tied up with canvassing and volunteering for the elections. Have not been on these Forums much within the past six weeks. However, if I do return actively you may see me post that phrase. Please be aware I do not mean it as an insult or as an ego trip.
@BirkiLady I too, have told posters to educate themselves. Sometimes people post on subject matters that they have no clue of and give wrong information as the gospel truth.
I get frustrated with them. My father used to say that some people talk to just hear themselves and I feel that some people here do that.
i don't say that to hurt feelings or feel superior, but to hopefully get people to really look something up.
We all need to be educated from time to time. Many posters have taught me a thing or two and have corrected something I posted. I don't get upset. I just thank the poster for letting me know. I really appreciate that fact that they read my comments and took the time to reply. Sometimes I need to educate myself too.

@Carmie @BirkiLady First I want to be clear that I, too, never want to hurt feelings, I'd feel terrible if I did that.
You two have shared the same reactions that lead to tell someone to educate themselves. I love learning, am kind of a sponge, there will never be a day in the rest of my life that I'll need to be told to educate myself. I hope that can be okay. I welcome anytime I post something in error that someone will put the mistake out of it's misery. The only thing worse than posting a mistake is having it hang out there.
Sorry my post seemed targeted, but if you tell me to educate myself know that I probably will not feel helped but I'll smile remembering this thread and the polite conversation. A lot of sharing of helpful knowledge happens here, most aren't expecting anything step-by-step in-depth, at least where I read.

When you post a directive like, look it up and educate yourself, it comes across as bossy.
Assuming a reason for another's post is condescending and rude.
Expecting that others should post as you would like is rather pompous and an entitled attitude.
Mean posts, posters are in the eye of the reader and, unless it's name calling, is not really anyone's business but the one who posted.

(bolded by me) This is something I've been saying for a long time, as a cautionary tale, about this board. You can cruise this board on any given moment and find numerous things stated that are patently false.
I usually just end up backing out of threads where lies are stated as truths because it's futile to try and bring facts to somebody who repeats things that are not true. LIke one poster said here one day - they have decided that their opinions are facts. That person was serious when he stated that his opinions ARE facts and that will not change. What do you do with that degree of ridiculosity? SMH

@chiclet wrote:It surprises me how someone can post and the responses that follow did not get the meaning of the original post and turn it into something else. Or responses are so hateful. It is like they can pick apart the topic and find something so negative to rage about. I saw one post about the decline of home shopping and then it became out the original poster being disrepectful about the older generation. I come on here to listen to different points of view and to get reviews and helpful information.
I remember reading that thread and the reference to the older generation appeared to be taken out of context. I didn't take any offense to it as I am the older generation. Just goes to prove that what one person thinks of as hateful, another isn't offended at all.
For the most part I do not believe that anyone is coming here purposely to offend anyone. I take most of what is posted regarding opinion as their right to have one.. even if it is in disagreement with my own. In fact, I learn a lot reading those who hold completely different viewpoints than my own.

It amazes me that everyone has access to the internet with smartphones or tablets or computers and could get 'correct' information, yet they will post something off FB or from an email......As Fact!
Yes, they need to "educate yourself!" Why would someone be offended to learn the truth?????
