Re: Welcome Back, Butter, We Missed You OUR MISGUIDED FAT-IS-EVIL THINKING IS FINALLY GOING AWAY: MARK BITTMAN

I stopped using margarine, CoffeeMate, no fat Mayo and salad dressing years ago. If I eat one of these things, I use the real thing. I don't use sugar much but when I do, it's real sugar.

My weight stabilized and in fact, I lost weight when I cut out all the fat-free junk.

That doesn't mean you can eat a stick of butter a day. It just means when you use the product, you use the real version instead of the fake. I've found I use less because it is more flavorful and satisfying.

Exactly ... we take everything and UP SIZE it. I remember eating at my great aunts house and thinking she was starving everyone because of the portions of food she put on everyones plate. They were healthy, her kids and grandkids were healthy so they didn't starve. My grandmother (her sister) overfed herself and everyone she could.

Fate whispers to her, "You cannot withstand the storm." She whispers back, "I am the storm."

It's true. For people who are trying to learn portion control, it is recommended that they use a luncheon plate in place of the dinner plate. It will force them to take smaller portions.

No thanks. I'll still be using as little butter, fats, margarine as I can, avoiding fat on the little meat that we do eat and continue eliminating processed foods when possible.

ITA! BUT, these clueless people can eat all the fat, greasy gunk until they pop. Have to keep the doctors in business. Have to keep the insulin makers in business. Have to keep the dialysis centers in business. So go ahead, eat away. You'll pay later. Guaranteed.

I think you may be the one who is clueless. Fat is essential in our diet. We should have fat in moderation. Real butter is better for you than fake margarine.

she isn't clueless. Read her post again. If you think reading "fat, greasy gunk until they pop" is in "moderation", think again.

Americans eat too much junk. Period. This type of article is clueless because the problem isn't the food - it is the "in moderation" part that Americans fall flat on.

No one here has advocated in anything but moderation. To say butter makes you fat is ridiculous. That is a clueless statement. No one here is guzzling fat, greasy junk until they pop. Butter is better than margarine for you.

Americans aren't getting fat from eating fat, they are getting fat from eating too much period. To blame it on fat is clueless.

I almost had to laugh because there was a serving (vegetables/salad) bowl that was as big as most cereal bowls are today.

When I visit Australia, you can get a real feel of how huge our portions are. What is even funnier is having my friends from Australia come visit her and going out to eat with them. They are overwhelmed and one thing in particular that bothers them is the unending refills of pop.

I seriously don't know how people can finish a full American sized meal at a restaurant. I never have. It is just too much. My stomach would pop.

Look at the French. They eat 4 x's more butter than we do and 60% more cheese. and we have more problems with coronary death than they do.

Oh yes! A friend had a French exchange student stay with her and the girl just could NOT get used to taking a care EVERYWHERE.

LOL! Just about every country walks more places than we do. They eat a lot more fruit and veggies than most Americans too. I say most Americans because I know a lot of people who eat healthy and care about what they put into their bodies. We are big fruit and veggie eaters in my family.
