@Trailrun23 When this was announced on the news a couple weeks ago a man called the talk back segment the news has. He was going on about the 5 cents a bag thing. He said he wouldn't go to Wegmans anymore.
I don't think a nickle is bad. If you won't want to pay just get reuseable ones.

Have always insisted on paper bags.........use them for donations - to hold recycle newspapers. magazines, etc.
Nickle is worth it. I buy plastic bags from Amazon for other things.

It makes some sense. However, during the Covid-19 Pandemic, stores where we live did not want customers to bring their own cloth bags into stores. It was back to plastic. Policies change according to the times that we are going through.

In my state, California, we voters approved a state wide, single use carry out bag ban back in 2016. It's been routine for years here for shoppers to bring their own reusable bags. The law effects most grocery stores, retail stores with a pharmacy, convenience stores, food marts, and liquor stores so that they are no longer able to provide single-use plastic carryout bags to their customers. Instead, these stores may provide a reusable grocery bag or recycled paper bag to a customer at point of sale at a charge of at least 10 cents. Just about everyone I know has resusable bags they keep in their car for shopping. Surprising to hear other areas of the country just now adopting this years after California.

In Md - I believe it was Trader Joe's who DID NOT accept cloth bags (during COVID) to bag groceries - I am not sure if that 'ban' is still in place. I like their paper bags for recycling so I am Thankful they still have paper bags.
I have too many cloth Trader Joe's bags that I use when shopping at TJ Maxx, Marshalls and the other grocery stores of course.

Here in Rochester where Wegmans began, we have been using reusable bags for years. Plastic was banned maybe 2 years ago(?) not sure. So used to NOT having plastic I do not miss it at all. so much more room in the reusables...and kinder to environment.

In NJ - The law banning plastic bags and polystyrene foam food service products went into effect on May 4, 2022
New Jersey retail stores, grocery stores and food service businesses may not provide or sell single-use plastic carryout bags and polystyrene foam food service products. Plastic straws may be provided only upon the request of the customer.

Not a fan of the new policy. Wegman's has a bin in their foyer for recycling these bags and our trash collectors accept them as recyclable. They are more than one use bags. I use them for garbage can liners and they are good for picking up after pets. I think they're more interested in saving money then the environment. Wonder how much that saves them in the course of a year which of course won't be passed on to the customer. Plus the money they make selling us their store bags.

I'm all for reusable bags. Been using them for many years now.

I just wish I could find a place, since Covid, where I can recycle the plastic ones I have at home. The husband cannot be bothered to use his own bags (or take paper! how freakin' hard can that be!
) so I have quite a few of them from over the years. I'm not going to throw them away so I guess I'll just keep on keeping them until I can find a way to recycle.
I'm shocked that the recycle bin with Waste Management doesn't allow the plastic bags. I don't get it! There are other plastic items you can put in there - just about everything but plastic bags.
at my Target - there is a bin out front - plastic bags, plastic wrappings etc - so i use a plastic bag to collect all the wrappings that are in plastic- frozen veg etc- once i have a bagful - i make a trip and deposit - Lowe's also has a bin out front for plastic bags
