As of today Wegmans has no plastic bags in PA. You can bring reuseable ones or pay 5 cents for a paper bag. Money from the paper bags goes to charity.
I like it. DD has taken reuseable bags for a couple years. She found some cute fabrics and made her own. They can get tossed in the washer and dryer.

Been like that at our Wegmans for the last 2 months in MD.

@CrazyKittyLvr2 Good to know. A new Wegmans is being built in the town next to mine but I'm not sure when it will be ready. I'm in PA.

I've used reusable bags for years and years

Ours in NJ started awhile ago. Our Shop Rite in NY started a few years ago.

When they first got rid of them here (NJ) I thought no big deal because I have a lifetime supply of plastic bags in this house. It would be nice if I ever remembered to bring them. Now I'm working on my lifetime supply of 99 cents cheap "cloth" bags.

@VanSleepy I still get plastic occasionally from the Dollar Store or CVS. I need to remember to keep a couple cloth ones in the car.
I do reuse any plastic bags. I use them when I clean out the litter box. I just tie it up tight and throw in the garbage. I keep one in the car for any coffee/drink cups, Kleenex etc.

Although there's no mandate where I live, I take reuseable bags with me to the supermarket. The cashiers add plastic bags to protect some items or for those who don't bring bags.
When I was still a snowbird, I came home one spring to discover bags cost 5 cents each and it didn't matter whether you were buying groceries or clothes or trinkets or pharmacy. All bags cost.
Most people learned very quickly to bring their own bags, but sometimes it was quite amusing to watch people who forgot bags cost try to avoid paying. No surprise that was most often men who were doing their wives a favor picking up a few things, but often still more than they could easily carry. Although the law did not require it, most businesses donated the money they had to collect.
There we also paid a 5 cent fee on all recyclable bottles and cans (could have been either a state or a county law- I don't remember.

We don't have Wegman's here, but the plastic bag ban put in the place by the county a few years ago was a failure, so they pulled it. People squawked at being charged for a bag. Since Covid, you have to bag your own groceries if you bring your own bags; the workers aren't allowed to touch them..so I hate bagging and let them do it with plastc. All the stores have big bins to put the plastic bags in for recycle on your next trip.

Unfortunately, they still have plastic bags here but I've brought my own bags for many years now. It's easy to just keep them in my car and bring in however many I think I need.
I just wish I could find a place, since Covid, where I can recycle the plastic ones I have at home. The husband cannot be bothered to use his own bags (or take paper! how freakin' hard can that be!
) so I have quite a few of them from over the years. I'm not going to throw them away so I guess I'll just keep on keeping them until I can find a way to recycle.
I'm shocked that the recycle bin with Waste Management doesn't allow the plastic bags. I don't get it! There are other plastic items you can put in there - just about everything but plastic bags. ![]()
