It can be much quicker for customers with a few items. They usually have a bank of several registers that are watched by 1 or 2 employees depending on the size. Instead of taking care of them one at a time several can check out at the same time. A win - win for store and customer.
I doubt they are doing it to help customers.
You are welcome to believe what you want, however I know many people who love them. So customers are satisified with the changes.
Are the employees ,happy?

They get a paycheck for the job they do so I am sure they are happy enough. Just as anyone else is who works for a living.

Our Home Depot got rid of all the cashiers and just have the one that is there for self checkout help. Don't know if they were given other jobs within the store or not.
On weekends when it gets busy, they do open some regular registers.
The grocery store in town doesn't have any self checkouts. They have about 20 regular ones and they are all usually not open. I'm thinking maybe they will get rid of some of those and put in self serve. This is not one of those mega stores, although they did a big upgrade in order to compete with Wegmans.

I flat out refuse to spend my hard earned money there. Walmart's an evil, evil entity that has as much benefit on this earth as fire ants.
Every time they crush the competition in a market, their prices skyrocket and the customer has no where else to shop. They have no concern for their customers or employees. What else is there?

Hate self check out. How many jobs are lost thru that? Makes wealthy companies even wealthier.

Why not? Because it steals many jobs.

Everyday there are shoplifters caught at the store. I go to the police department site and check out who was arrested. I can't the believe how dumb or desperate people are. Some people are caught with a cart load of stolen goods.
Their security department sure gets a workout. I am sure the shop lifting problems inflate prices for all of us.
Wow, I am surprised they have a 90 day return policy. If you hung on to clothing for 3 months before you returned it, it would be out of season and could not be put back on the rack, and they would lose money on it.
Most retailers, including Amazon, have a 30 day or less return policy.
Your observations at correct, @Carmie . Walmart not only ATTRACTS crime, all types of crime, to a community but it's so pervasive, the police can't keep up with it. There's so many police calls from Walmart that they don't even respond unless someone is injured. That's verbatim from my local police department.
If you ever get mugged in broad daylight at a Walmart parking lot, I doubt you'll ever shop there again. Happens every minute. The police do not resond to the muggings either, unless you're injured, too many they say. They won't investigate either. You have to visit the police department if you want to make a report.
Yes, Walmart is great for crime and all sorts of other bad stuff. Has anyone ever seen security in their Walmart parking lot? They're not going to pay for that. Not even at night.
Yes, it's about less registers, more profit and less service. But it's much more than that.

@WindingRoad The police at my local Walmart respond quickly. They are there often.
Also, Walmart security is on the ball. They drive around in a security truck and check the parking lot during the day and also during the night.
There have been muggings in the parking lot, and the greeter was hit and knocked out of his wheel chair when he chased a shoplifter, so yes there is crime.
I suppose I am fortunate that our police offices and emergency services are fast responders. I have no complaints against them.
We also have crimes the local grocery stores and gas stations too. In today's world, no where is 100% safe.

@Carmie If it sounded like your Walmart is everything bad like the one's here, I am sorry. I was only referring to your comments about the crime in the stores.
Our Super Walmart does not have any outside security and the police come only if someone's hurt. It's a bad situation. I was mugged in the parking lot by a drug addict at 11am the the front door guy said, don't bother to ask me to get our manager. He doesn't give a rat's a**.
But I disliked Walmart, for all the reasons I mentioned, before that happened.
I didn't intend to misquote you. Sorry.

@WindingRoad Oh not a problem. I am sorry that your Walmart is not a safe place. I feel safe at my local one, but I am always cautious. In today's world, you have to be careful everywhere.
I was at my local Walmart one evening with my husband's SUV. I opened the back door and put something inside then climbed over the back seat to the front.
When I put the key into the ignition, and started it, all kinds of alarms were going off. No matter what I did, i couldn't get the noise to stop. It wasn't long before Walmart Security and the police were there. I tried to drive away with the horn blasting and the lights blinking, but they stopped me. I was so embarrassed.
I will never do that again. I always use a key to open the driver's door. I am glad they were there, but was my face red.
