Everyday there are shoplifters caught at the store. I go to the police department site and check out who was arrested. I can't the believe how dumb or desperate people are. Some people are caught with a cart load of stolen goods.
Their security department sure gets a workout. I am sure the shop lifting problems inflate prices for all of us.
Wow, I am surprised they have a 90 day return policy. If you hung on to clothing for 3 months before you returned it, it would be out of season and could not be put back on the rack, and they would lose money on it.
Most retailers, including Amazon, have a 30 day or less return policy.
Your observations at correct, @Carmie . Walmart not only ATTRACTS crime, all types of crime, to a community but it's so pervasive, the police can't keep up with it. There's so many police calls from Walmart that they don't even respond unless someone is injured. That's verbatim from my local police department.
If you ever get mugged in broad daylight at a Walmart parking lot, I doubt you'll ever shop there again. Happens every minute. The police do not resond to the muggings either, unless you're injured, too many they say. They won't investigate either. You have to visit the police department if you want to make a report.
Yes, Walmart is great for crime and all sorts of other bad stuff. Has anyone ever seen security in their Walmart parking lot? They're not going to pay for that. Not even at night.
Yes, it's about less registers, more profit and less service. But it's much more than that.
@WindingRoad Sorry, but you're statement is not true of every Walmart. I see security patrolling Walmart parking lots in their SUV's all hours of the day and night. Our Walmart even has police cars patrolling the parking lot. I love Walmart and shop there weekly either in the store or on the website. Oh and I love self check-outs and look for those first. I use them at Walmart, Target and the grocery store.

@DJs mom That's why I posed the problem about the lack of adequate security in Walmart parking lots as a question. There's no security in the parking lots at Walmarts near me.
Have you considered that the reason there are additional police cars patrolling the parking lot at your Walmart is solely due to the huge amount of crime everyday at Walmart, both in and outside the store.
One day, a friend and I visited our the Walmart Supercenter. As we got out of the car, she noticed swat team vehicles and many police officers at the entryway. At the other set of doors, there was another swat team and their black vehicles.
We looked at each other and said, 'No, let's go somewhere else'. I watched as person after person after person just walked past the obvious police presence and did not even notice it, either on their phones or it just didn't register.
I think, for the most part, people are either so involved in their own little world or just completely desensitized to everything, including bad things going on, even those right around them.
If you love self checkouts in general, then you're not concerned that Walmart and other large retailers are eliminating jobs in your neighborhood. It's only to create more profit for them. At the end of the day, Walmart helps Walmart and harms their employees, vendors, customers and communities.
There's a very good documentary, "Walmart: The High Cost of Low Price." It's very informative.

Why would you ever choose to visit there with a friend. Apparently you friend does not share your views and you decided to go along with her. Kind of hypicritical.
FYI - If in fact SWAT teams were at the doors as you say.....people would not be allowed in the area, other officers would be there to prevent it.

I find it unsettling that a community would put up with the police departments position. They are not only failing to protect the community, their not responding is actually creating a place where criminals are encouraged to commit crimes. I would blame the police department in this case not Walmart.
I shop at Walmart at all hours and know many people who do also bing so close to the local hospital. While I am sure it is not a crime free zone, I do know that the local police patrol the area and will respond if needed. Any community that accepts anything less is being cheated.
@CrazyDaisy I guess you're talking a bout my post. If you don't "mention" me, I don't see your posts that comment on mine. Maybe you could do that please. Unless you're really are not wanting responses.
I think you put all the resposibilty on the police and none on Walmart. Walmart is the cause of the crime. The crimes at Walmart are done and then they run.
The amount of crime at Walmarts is so high, the police cannot keep up with it. It takes away from other issues in the community where they're also needed.
If the answer is more patrols, the people, the taxpayers and community will need to bear the expense of paying for it. Walmart won't pay for that. Is that the answer and an equitable solution?
Yes, your right, the community is being cheated. But it's Walmart cheating them.

That’s crazy talk.
Also, so you know, Walmart, until they got caught, used to take out life insurance policies on low level employees to bolster their top level executives slush funds? Yes, until they were caught and were sued by the widows and widowers of the deceased employees.
It's a FACT. You can google this. 60 minutes or 48 hours, I forget which, did a terrific segment to expose this about Walmart.
I really don't have to denigrate them. Walmart's actions say plenty..

In the news today are articles that Walmart is going to be getting rid of their Walmart greeters. Many of the greeters are people with disabilities who will find it difficult to get another job, even at Walmart.
I realize that this is a separate issue from the one about self serve checkout lines, but I also think it's an important one.
I was in a Walmart Canada today and the irony of a canned message overhead asking people to support Walmart's food bank drive wasn't lost on me as some of those greeters who get terminiated in April will likely be using or need to use a food bank.
I will be rethinking doing any shopping there.
