I use my milk until it smells funny.  In fact, I noticed that most of the milk I buy doesn't have an expiration date, it says best if sold by on it. 

I've gone as much as a week past the date on the milk and it still smells and tastes perfectly fine.   

As far as half and half goes, it has a date on it that is generally pretty far out but if you read the side of the container, it says to use it within 10 days of opening.  I have found that to be pretty much true.  Once it's further out then that, it comes out in small chunks and needs to be tossed.
