@Icegoddess@I think it is kind of you to have concern for your neighbors...maybe it is time to call the police for a wellness check. If the utilities have been shut off then something isn’t right over there.

I think you could call the police to describe the situation and see what they advise. It would be interesting to see how law enforcement views this.
I have occasionally called the police for advice myself and they have always been helpful.

@Icegoddess, something for your consideration. You could try a google search on the couple to see if there are any news reports of accidents/hospitalizations, arrests or missing persons reports.
I do, however, think that if anything suspicious or odd happened to the couple, if they disappeared, after this length of time someone they know--friends, family, co-workers--would have been inquiring.
I don't recall if you ever mentioned their family status. Do they have children and if so what ages?

Concern is one thing..overstepping is another and it sounds like you have been doing that since they moved in. Keeping an eye on the neighbors is one thing...keeping an eye doesn't mean looking up tax records etc...I can't believe what I am reading.
Sorry but I am of another opinion on this... I cannot believe you checked the tax records ...and I can't believe all of this super sleuthing. If you feel their safety is in jeopardy a wellness check can be done...anything else is beyond busy body.
If the "supposition" that something nefarious is going on then call the police. I can't believe asking the mail lady about holds and it being extended, including their electric etc..how many cars they had/have. Now the mail lady is tracking you down..wow is all I can say. I am sure she has protocol for situations.
If you have any concern that something is wrong then call the police for a welfare/wellness check. Anything else is beyond not your business. Guessing -- Calculating dates of when they purchased something and when it should be paid etc.
It is one thing if you were generally concerned you would call the police. I had a neighbor...day one the paper was in the driveway - along with his car..but when day two the car was in the driveway still and two papers were there..I turned around went back into my house and called his granddaughter as something didn't look right. She didn't answer - front door was locked...back door was open but screen door shut. I could see the dog standing there not doing anything and grocery bags. I called the police within minutes of doing that his boss showed up as he didn't show up to work and he was concerned too. He had a key went in at the same time police arrived. He was found in the bathroom..massive heart attack. So I get being concerned about your neighbors...you call the police..
You seem to have been the Nancy Drew since you checked the tax records thinking they were in the witness protection - along with everything else..wow just wow...

@Marp, I don't know of any family. Doesn't mean there isn't any. I did try Googling his name, but all I got was results for a same-named celebrity.
@CouponQueen, tax records are public and available online, at least for my county. I didn't come up with that; someone here suggested it. I certainly didn't go down to the courthouse and pull up the records. As far as the car goes, I remember him getting the car shortly after they moved in. Since the tax records show when they bought the house, it's an easy calculation. Most people finance a car for 4 to 6 yrs. My husband was the one who noticed the red tag on the utility meter which is right across from our driveway. I didn't call the utility company. And, yes, the mail carrier did flag me down. As far as noticing where they parked the cars, they normally park on the street which is on a hill and since they are also the corner house, it makes it difficult for people to tell if there is oncoming traffic, and our driveway is less than 10 feet away from theirs.

Call the police, and let them know your concerns.

So, I decided against going to the police because I am truly confidant they left of their own accord and their bodies are not laying in the house. I did, however, contact my city councilman to get his take on the situation. I have contacted him in the past about other minor problems and have found him to be very receptive and always responds.

I would think the stench would be noticeable if they were dead in there. What I find amazing and sad is that the neighborhool is so unaware of what each other is doing. Every home I've lived in the neighbors were friendly and at least would know if someone was going to be gone for a while. We have keys to two of our neighbor's homes and keep an eye on the place if they're out of town.

Maybe this is just a story.
There have been others over the years. Old timers will remember.

Some of us know the importance of being aware of our surroundings. We won't find ourselves blown up by a neighbor's faulty meth lab. No child trafficking will continue in our neighborhood. No one living alone will slowly die lying there unable to call for help. No one will abuse their dog/cat in my neighborhood without being reported...
My neighborhood is safe; I can go for a walk alone at midnlght because of my nosy neighbors.
Exactly!
There is stuff that is no one's business, and then there is seeing and knowing when illegal things are going on, or when someone might be in trouble/need of help.
People here can't have it both ways. We can't always 'mind our own business' and still be a contributing factor to a safe and friendly community.
