In our grocery stores it seems to be expected for the customer to also bag their own groceries.  I almost never hear "thank you for bagging".  So all they are doing is dragging my items over a scanner and then putting it back on the belt to come down to me to do the bagging!  I have found Wegman's has a system where the cashier also bags.  I just wish they weren't so far away from my home because I would switch to them.

Thank you for bringing this up!  It really annoys me to spend a boat load of money at a store and the cashier doesn't even say thank you.  One time I said thank you when leaving (don't know why I do that) and the cashier said "your welcome"!  My brain just screamed "what???"

Wow you two expect everyone in retail to bow down and thank you for shopping there? You sound very entitled. I would think nothing of thanking the employees at the grocery store for their service. It's hard working in customer service with so many selfish, entitled, demanding customers.

I don't mind these replys.

Saying You are Welcome is just a social phrase acknowledging another's phrase.

Any pleasant reply works.

If someone does something nice for you, because they want to, have to, or just did, I think it is rude or at least ungrateful to quibble (even in your mind) about how they respond to your "thank you."

I mean really, they helped you and you are disappointed about two words from them?  Good grief!

As to bagging the groceries while the cashier rings them up - I cannot recall a time when the cashier didn't thank me for bagging.  It seems like they have always been appreciative.

If there isn't a bagger, I jump right in.   I just cannot imagine standing there doing nothing, while watching the merchandise pile up at the end of the counter that the cashier will have to bag after completing the ring-up.  Why not help?  But they always say thank you for bagging.

Oh, and my response to their 'thank you' is usually 'no problem. glad to help'.

In France and Spain the response to "Thank you" is, translated, "It's nothing!" De rien! De nada!

I like saying, "Happy to do it!" as a response to "Thank you." Probably ticking some people off with that response too. "Who cares if you're happy!" blablabla.

Well perhaps doing it could've made you very unhappy thereby offending the other party. Please do better.Cat Very Happy

@JJsMom Hahaha. Maybe I'll try, "Yeah, I did that FOR you. Way to ruin my day." No one can fault such a perfect response to their appreciation.

@Drythe Me too! I want to travel soooo bad.

I think is is just another product of the SELFCentered mindset of the age.  "No Problem", meant it was no problem for THEM to take the time out of their life to help you.  "You are welcome", means YOU are welcme to my effort.  Self centered response vs Courtesy.

That's a BIG STRETCH.  No one is obligated to say you're welcome or thank you to anyone for any reason.  It is a courtesy and a simple gesture we use in a civil society to be polite.  It is not against any moral or legal laws if someone doesn't say "Thank you." @candys mine

We are so accustomed to saying it has lost its meaning (if there were ever a genuine meaning behind it anyway).

In the big scheme of life, even just focussing on the ongoing adulteration of our language, I'm afraid this is not one that gives me serious heartburn...

The Dictionary adds new words every year.  Sometimes it takes them a while to consider a new "adulteration" of English, but in the end it's in the Dictionary and voila some new saying is a word!

I personally am going to invest in a book of idioms.

Re: The Evolution of simple language: "No problem", "No Worries". vs "You'

@gertrudeclosetI wasn't responding about the "Thank You" at all but The "You are welcome" aspect.  For the record, when I say "THANK YOU," I MEAN IT.  If I say thank you, it would be nice if the response didn't make me feel like I was putting them out but it Wasn't a huge problem for them to do whatever they did but rather, I was welcome to their aid.

And you are right, there is no obligation,  but it IS, as you say, a courtesy.
