One-time payments only, to be sent out in May (though they're still "discussing that) .And, yes, those on SS will be getting one, too. (As an aside, I don't know where this idea that SS recipient don't pay taxes comes from. Add to that their anemic SS COLAS...)

May?!

That's too long for some people to have to wait.

We pay income tax on our SS payments.

I may be wrong, but I don't think that anyone currently receiving Social Security income benefits will be included, even if they have continued to work but are currently out of work.  Just an educated guess.

Re: Stimulus check question

[ Edited ]

Well, hopefully, those who need it,

"the check's in the mail!"

and just fyi in reply to @hckynut ,

not every retired person has to pay taxes. The SS on retirement is not taxed if below a certain amount of income whether "earned" or not (working or not) do not have to pay taxes, or even file taxes.

So it depends on one's income.

Some SS is taxed at a certain percent.

It will be great if SS is increased but it does seem that no one has clear answers yet, but I heard Chuck Schumer said the full bill will be made public (I think by next week).

At any rate, I am so glad they finally passed this! It is hard to imagine the worry and stress people have been going through, not only about getting the virus but having no money to pay for anything or losing their entire business, or being left on the street (though evictions have been postponed in most ciities). I hope that is national too?

Believe it or not, @Mmsfoxxie, we have bills to pay and jobs too.  We do not live off the land....  Get real for goodness sake.

@KatieB

If you are retired & still make enough money to file a return you should be eligible for it the way I understand it.

If people are not filing a tax return our government feels you are no longer contributing to society so not eligible???

@Nightowlz   I think you are partially correct.  The way I understand it is that if you file a tax return, yes, you will get a check if your income was less than $75K.

To get the the check, you must file a tax return this year whether you have any tax liability or not.  Then you would receive the stimulus check this year.

No mention is made as to the fact of whether or not 'you are contributing to society' as you put it.   I do not think your contributions to society or lack thereof is a factor.

I am concerned that they mentioned they will be using the 2018 tax returns to determine the amount. That was the last year I worked, followed by retirement. My income for 2018 was significantly higher than it is now (and last year), so I don't know if I will get one or a reduced amount. I know there is no way to be current, lthough I would think the IRS system would "know" how much I made last year. Oh well, anythinghelps.

But, if it is true that our SS will go up, that is fabulous!

I'd like to see a link too.  I really don't believe this...  SS fund would go broke with that amount of increase (or close to broke).

Not sure how you file a tax return with nothing to put on it?

Contributing to society is how I feel it works I know it's not part of their deal but IMO that's why.
